Hi, I'm hoping to get some clarification.
I bought a brand new sim-free iphone 6s from tesco, not realising until after its purchase that it would lock to the network of the first sim used. I haven't yet used a sim in it but have opened the box so can't return it. I'm going travelling for a year in August so will need the phone unlocked to use international sims. I read all of the forums and found that most people said the best solution would be to get a PAYG EE sim, top up £10, register online and apply for it to be unlocked online. I went into two EE stores to double check their unlocking procedure and it was very obvious that the staff had no clue what they were talking about. One told me that my phone would not lock even though I know for sure that it will. Another told me that EE will only unlock a phone purchased from them. Another told me to ask carphone warehouse to unlock it, even though the phone has nothing to do with them.
I'm hoping for a clear answer as everyone I've spoken to has told me different things.

You can no longer unlock a phone not bought from EE using a PAYG SIM.
To unlock a non-EE purchased phone you need to call Customer Services on 0800 956 6000 (option 2, option 4) to put you in touch with the Unlocking Team to request an Unlock Code. You will be asked for your email addy. They will take payment (of £8.99) from any valid bank card.
Once the process has been started you will receive an email from the Unlocking Team to process the unlock.
