I’ve paid for the unlocking code and still haven’t received anything for a week. I am abroad currently and need to use a local sim. I’ve had my EE contract for over 2 years. I’ve tried a different sim and no luck.

You don't receive a code with an iPhone.
You complete it using either iTunes or iCloud.
You need to insert a sim compatible with iPhone though.
