How to unlock a phone when account is closed?

I had this phone bought 3 years ago and it's locked. I haven't been using this phone or number. When I login into online account it shows 

What happened?

Sorry, your account has been closed.

 

How do I request unlock code now?

Where did you get this device originally? Did you buy it yourself new direct from EE or from a reseller or is it 2nd-hand? The unlocking process & costs are different. Was it on contract or PAYG?

Directly, online and new from EE. I think it was PAYG, can't remember,

If the device had been on your contract for at least 6 months, even if that contract has now been cancelled, you can just apply using the Unlocking your device form and giving the mobile number that it originally came with. It will first show your new current phone on that number, if any, & ask whether that is the device you want to unlock? If not, you will then have to type in the IMEI of the old phone.
