Re: fraud

I had just received one of these texts last night, I’m so grateful to you for putting a post on here so I could check for fraud first.

+44 7756 563304 That was the number it came from in case anyone else receives a text.

Re: fraud

I'm glad my report has helped.  I don't personally use a modern type of phone so I don't know how much information is given but I'd say the key thing is to make a note of the website it wants you to visit - in my reported case it was https://ee.update.ref089.com

Then go to a reputable site such as whois https://www.whois.com/whois and type in the website you want to check and click search.  If the search results don't look like the company the text is claiming to be from then look for where it says "Registrar Abuse Contact Email".  Make a note of the email address and send them a brief email saying you think a site for which they are registrar could be pretending to be a different site and you would like them to investigate.  Include the website in question.

This is what I did and they responded very quickly telling me they would contact the vendor and the site will be down within 48 hours.  In this case I noticed it was just a few minutes before the site was flagged as potentially harmful when browsing for it using Google Chrome.

Certainly in the meantime it would also help if a warning is posted online - such as here if the site is pretending to be EE.

Best regards.

Re: Is this +44 7756 563304 genuinely EE contacting me?

@Kelly1993 : If the msg is like @matt8000's, it's a scam! There are many of these going the rounds. EE would never send you a msg asking you to click on a link in order to update your a/c.

Did the msg contain a link? If so, don't go there but what was the link?

Report it to EE by forwarding it to 7726 (S.P.A.M. on your keypad).

Re: Is this +44 7756 563304 genuinely EE contacting me?

I think it's worth pointing out that in all cases the senders number can be faked.  It's not really a good way of saying whether a text is genuine or not I'm afraid.

Instead we need to look at what the text is wanting you to do.  If it wants you to visit a website (especially to 'update your billing details') then we need to see (try not to visit it directly) the website they are trying to direct you to and use a site such as whois to find out who they are.

@matt8000 : Yes, msgs from EE usually come from "EE".

Re: Is this +44 7756 563304 genuinely EE contacting me?

As you know, if a scammer knows the number they can change their sender ID to match it. However if they do this they won't be wanting their potential victims to contact such a number.  Instead they would try and direct them to a dodgy website.

Back to the number though. If the scammer wanted to they could even pretend to be from your main house landline (if they knew what that number was).

Sender ID (aka caller ID) is an unreliable way of identification as it can be spoofed (faked).

Re: Is this +44 7756 563304 genuinely EE contacting me?

Hi.

The whois database shows us this is not really EE

https://www.whois.com/whois/ref092.com

We therefore look for the abuse contact in the whois database and send them an email to warn them and they will take action.

Re: Is this +44 7756 563304 genuinely EE contacting me?

Thanks. That domain, faked to look like EE, was only created 3 days ago in Malaysia. Browsers are already warning it's deceptive.

Re: Is this +44 7756 563304 genuinely EE contacting me?

Yes, it has the same registrar as the one I reported yesterday.

I've now reported this one and advised them of the domain pattern so hopefully they can check similar domains and take them down.
