Why was my SIM deactivated before the new one arrived?

I started the migration process to EE from Orange on Monday and was told the sim would be delivered on Wed or Thuresday but DPD tried to deliver on Tue when I was out. Later on Tuesday my old Sim was deactavated. I was told the phone would remain working until I put the new sim in. I am now not even able to contact EE on 150 or DPD. I rely on my phone as I am not very mobile. Any help would be greatfully recived.
