Region Lock - Dual SIM - 'European SIM card Only' - Samsung S10

Hello,

I have just purchased a 24 month contract for my S10 which has come with a 4G Multi SIM and live in the UK.

The sticker says

'European SIM card Only - European model, this product should be activated with a SIM card issued from a mobile phone operator within Europe...To use SIM cards from other regions, a cumulative call over five minutes must first be made with the SIM card from European operators'.

I am going travelling soon to Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand and wish to confirm that when I am there I will be able to use their local SIM cards in the second slot.

Just want to confirm if all I need to do is essentially activate the SIM provided with the phone, then I can without unlocking the phone (as it is a brand new phones and therefore under the 6 month ownership period that EE demands before you can request an unlock code), insert a Thai SIM, and use it without any problems?

Thanks for your help.

You can't unlock an EE contract phone for the first 6 months. It is owned by EE for that long and you can't change it until then. Therefore you can't use a non-EE SIM until then.

Glad I didn't remove the shrink wrap then...

Just to confirm, an unlocked phone would in fact work with foreign SIM cards?

Thanks

@ayydasit

Where did you purchase the phone? Online or in store or on phone?

If you purchased from a store there is a no return policy.

If you purchase an unlocked device via Samsung it will work with other aims as long you use with a Europe sim for five minute calls first.

Online - Mobilephonesdirect.co.uk

I am going to purchase an unlocked phone instead via another website which has a 2 year Samsung warranty.

Then you dont have a EE handset and shouldn't be locked to EE.

Re: Region Lock - Dual SIM - 'European SIM card Only' - Samsung S10

Best way to test this would simply to put my current Giffgaff SIM into the phone, and see if it works, right?

Yes but first insert the EE sim. Incase it locks to first sim

Re: Region Lock - Dual SIM - 'European SIM card Only' - Samsung S10

You have Portugease firmware.

I doubt it will lock to any network. You will be fine using local non EU sims as long as you do the criteria which is stated on the box.

That is a Samsung stipulation not networks.

May I ask how you found out it has Portuguese firmware?

Nothing in that advert says its unlocked. However if it is unlocked it won't lock to the 1st SIM activated. Samsungs don't do that only Apples.

https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-s10/SM-G973F/ but it won't be unbranded Portuguese. It's on Feb firmware. Most countries are now on Apr or May firmware. There are many European countries with your Feb firmware, e.g UK & Italy. So you can't really tell where it's from. One clue might be the language in which some of default browser bookmarks are in.

Did you get a UK or Euro power adopter with it?

Re: Region Lock - Dual SIM - 'European SIM card Only' - Samsung S10

Alright nice one.

So I've put my Giffgaff SIM in, and it makes calls, and the data works.

Does this mean 100% this phone is unlocked?

With regards to using a foreign SIM, all I need to do is make a call for 5 minutes using my current SIM, and when I go abroad, I just insert the foreign SIM and it'll work automatically?

Sorry for all the questions - I just need to be 100% sure this is correct, or I could be with a non-functioning phone for 2 months.

Re: Region Lock - Dual SIM - 'European SIM card Only' - Samsung S10

Yes all you need to do is make up to five minutes of calls

They don't even have to be 1 straight call. It just have to be 5 mins before you can insert a non European sim card.

With regards not knowing where its from I can tell you it isnt the UK it doesnt matter if it came with an EU power adapter or a UK one.

You have a European model most likely from Portugal. This is where third parties source their devices from as it is cheaper than getting from Samsung UK/Ireland.
