How can I retain my EE pay-as-you-go number if abroad

I have had the same UK T-Mobile (now EE) number for years, but am now working abroad. I return to the UK at least once a year and usually top up my pay-as-you-go account for the duration of my stay. I have now received an EE message saying that my number has been cancelled for lack of use. I do not know if this is spam or for real.

If real, how can I retain this number, as it would be a great inconvenience to have to inform all my contacts of a new phone number, and print new business cards.

You needed to have made a chargeable call or text or buy a pack or top-up at least every 6 months. EE PAYG SIMs are deactivated after 6 months of non-use. You then have a further 3 months to call EE to reactivate it before it is lost completely.
