Cheapest Pay as you go SIM for TXT only

I have installed a TXT module in my Intruder Alarm, I have disabled the Arm/Disarm part of it so it wont send a TXT every morning and night. It is now configured to only send a TXT when the alarm is triggered ( hopefully never )

I now need a PAYG SIM that will last as long as possible without the unit having to send or receive a TXT every few weeks

I dont mind sending a TXT to the unit every month or so if needed but I dont want to be topping up with £5/£10 every month or so that I will never use.

Don't worry! 4G SIMs are downward compatible to 2G or 3G.

Re: Cheapest Pay as you go SIM for TXT only

Hi @Mike11

If you don't make a chargeable call or text from the SIM in 179 days it goes into hibernation so an EE PAYG SIM may not meet your needs.

More on EE PAYG Sims can be found here.

Thanks

Re: Cheapest Pay as you go SIM for TXT only

Hi Northerner

Thanks for quick reply

I can send a command txt to the unit and it will send a reply so that would be a chargeable txt

I do not mind doing that every few months or so

Do I just get a free SIM from EE and top up with £5

If I then sent a txt to the unit and get a reply say every 100 days would the £5 need to be topped up every few months or could I leave it untill the credit dropped to say a £1

Re: Cheapest Pay as you go SIM for TXT only

Yes,

  1. Get a free EE PAYG SIM from EE.
  2. Text STOP PACK to 150 before you top-up so as to prevent the pre-installed recurring Pack activating itself & being bought out of your credit.
  3. Then top-up with £5.
  4. Send it a text every 5 months or so, so that it replies with a chargeable text to a mobile no. Each 1 will cost 15p.
  5. As long as the credit remains above 15p you can continue doing this before you need to top-up again. You can find out how much credit it has left by texting BA to 150 from it or by looking in its MyEE online a/c that you can create for it.

Re: Cheapest Pay as you go SIM for TXT only

HI XraySpex

Thanks for reply I have just tried to get a free sim fromm EE from Northerner's link and when I pick get free Sim and pick top up later it wont let me order it. If I order it with a £5 top up now will I still be able to follow your "stop" instructions. I dont mind if I end up with £10 or so on the card as I can then forget about topping up for a year or so

Re: Cheapest Pay as you go SIM for TXT only

@Mike11: You should be able to order a free SIM & top-up later. I've done it many times. What error msg did it give?

However if you can't manage that choose the £5 top-up with the £1 Talk Pack. Still text STOP PACK as soon as you get it. Then if the Pack starts before you get in the most you'll lose is £1.
