Can't activate a replacement SIM

My old phone died so got a new one. It required a different size SIM so I ordered a replacement. The replacement requires activation by sending a text to the old phone, but it's dead. How can I activate the new sim? I called the support line, waded through some menus, and the recording just said to check online and hung up.
