@Hrh56 : If you are on contract, did you activate roaming on your EE a/c before you left UK by texting ROAMING to 150?
Often just rebooting the phone is the simple remedy. Otherwise try logging into your MyEE account online & go to Menu / Manage Device / Roaming Abroad and also Call Abroad and Premium rate. They will show as ticked if roaming and calling abroad is activated. If they are not ticked, can you activate these settings?
PAYG is auto enabled for roaming. You don't need to & can't do any of the above.

Welcome to the community, I hope you're having a lovely time in Lanzarote so far. 🙂
Could you try manually connecting to another available network?
|iPhone||Settings > Mobile Data > Network Selection > Turn off Automatic|
|Android||Settings > More Networks > Mobile Networks > Network Operators > Tap OK|
|Windows||Windows – Settings > Mobile Network > Network Selection > Tap on start manual search|

It seems that everything is set up as it should be then, @Hrh56.
It could be a local problem with the network that you're connected to. It's difficult to diagnose the problem when you're not connected to the EE network.
I recommend trying to connect to another network if you go out and about. Just to see if you get the same problem with messages on more than one network.
