I cannot buy any data in Iran

I have had two text messages on entering the country inviting me to send "50MB" to "1024" to get 50MB of data for 7 days ... the other text told me to send "D4" to "1024" to get 45MB of data for 7 days.

Trying each gives me the same response:

"From EE: We're sorry but there's been a technical error and we couldn't add the Roaming Data add-on to your account. You haven't been charged. Please try again later or click here http://add-on.ee.co.uk/text"

I have tried again and again later without success.

Can you help me sort this problem out as I have no mobile data.

Oh and I'm in Iran so I can't easily phone the help line.

Re: I cannot buy any data in Iran

Hi @Ian_Seaton,

If you are unable to browse http://add-on.ee.co.uk you must have no data connection with the carrier you are connected to.

Can you try turning off 4G and let me know if you can load http://add-on.ee.co.uk in your web browser. (Make sure WiFi is turned off)

Thanks

James

Re: I cannot buy any data in Iran

Hello @Ian_Seaton what happens when you try to access http://add-on.ee.co.uk?

This page is free to view all over the world you do not need a data allowance to access it.

Re: I cannot buy any data in Iran

Without any mobile data nothing happens. I get a no internet message.

Note that this same effect is happening on my personal and my business
phone (on android the other Apple) so it is systemic rather than particular
to one device.

Thanks

Re: I cannot buy any data in Iran

Have you got roaming enabled in the account? Log in to My EE online and navigate to My EE Mobile>Manage device for each number to check.

Have you got data roaming enabled in both of the devices settings? For Apple and Android tap settings>mobile data.

Are they both connected to the same roaming network?

Re: I cannot buy any data in Iran

Hi @Ian_Seaton and welcome back to the community.

Are you able to call and text at all?

So I can try and help, please may I get you to perform a manual network search and choose a network other than what you are on to see if the data connectivity appears.

iPhone: Go to Settings > Carrier and turn off Automatic. Wait until available networks appear, which might take two minutes. Tap the carrier that you want.

Android: Open the Settings menu >Tap More > Mobile Networks > Carrier and turn off Automatic. Wait until available networks appear, which might take two minutes. Tap the carrier that you want

Let us know how you get on.

Many thanks,

Re: I cannot buy any data in Iran

Lee,

Thanks for the advice, I'm a seasoned traveller so my first resort was to
try a different carrier but being a foreigner in Iran I'm limited to which
carriers I can use ... My android is using one called MCI the other three
are marked as (Forbidden) and my iPhone IR-TCI which is MCI by another
name, it does offers two other carriers neither of which are MCI but
neither of which give me a service so I'm guessing they're forbidden too.

So I'm stuck with the one carriers but it is my messages to EE which are
being rejected.

And yes, I can make calls and send txt messages when I'm not onsite which
isn't often.

Thanks

Re: I cannot buy any data in Iran

James,

Thanks for the tip about requesting 3G - it would seem that although my phone setting says Prefer 4G which I would take to mean it would fallback to 3G if 4G is not available but apparently not.

I'm not sure how much of a victory this is as data in Iran is £50 for 50MB but at least I can message people when I'm not at the hotel! 🙂

Thanks

Ian

Re: I cannot buy any data in Iran

Hi @Ian_Seaton

I'm glad you are now able to connect 🙂

I would advise turning off data to the apps you don't want draining your data bundle.

Many thanks,

Lee
