Why is data gifting the only option now? What was wrong with data sharing plans

I don't see why the only option to share data, is via data gifting.  I wouldn't mind too much if there was a way to make it automatic but having to do it each month manually, that sucks.

I really want to get a additional number with EE and lower the overall cost of having 2 lines but I'm not exactly happy about being made to do admin work each month and to remember to gift the data.

Why was this change made?

@matt55  Data gifting is there to allow a another device on your account to be given a small amount of data if their data has been used up.   You don’t need to gift until the other line has used up your here own allowance first.

Given that EE is on the expensive side, I was wanting to use it to keep costs down by getting the cheapest contract possible then sharing the data out so basically split my current 18GB allowance which I never use, down the middle.

Wifi/4G calling is the only thing that is tempting me to go with EE rather than one of the MVNO's that use the same network as EE.
