Family & Friends discount

My wife took out a contract at car phone warehouse for a blackberry phone on EE on the understanding that she would be able to apply the 30% discount to it.

I have since been told that the discount can only be applied if taken direct through EE.  Is this correct?

What are our options if this is correct? If need be we are willing to buy the handset outright and get a SIM only. We have not collected the handset yet or opened the SIM pack.
