About to buy first phone, how do upfront costs and monthly costs work?

Does an upfront cost pay for that month as well, or will you have to pay for the upfront and the monthly within the first month?

Re: About to buy first phone, how do upfront costs and monthly costs work?

They are separate.

You pay the upfront cost when you order or soon after, usually by bank card. You pay the monthly fee in advance for each month more or less from the start, by direct debit or any other method about a week after you are billed online on the same day each month.

Both are part of the price of a device. Some devices come with an upfront cost & some don't.
