What does upgrading got to do with 5000 emails.

And there will be a delete all or s box at the top to tick to select all and then you can delete all.

You probably read and deleted them from your old phone but left the originals on the Hotmail server. Now you have a new phone it has read them to it as unread by it emails.

You need to login to your Hotmail account at http://outlook.live.com where you will be able to delete them in bulk. It's unlikely you'll be able to do this from your Mail app

Hi @Dawnegregory

You should be able to change your email settings to only download a certain number of emails. Check your phone settings.

Thanks

@Northerner: That's only putting off the bad day. Download only 100  delete them, another 100 come down and so on  Best to get rid of them at source.

Or you can tell Mail app to delete them from server when they are deleted from its Inbox.
