What should I do to get ready for single sign on between My EE and Community?

Sorcha
Former EE Community Manager

We told you recently that we’re going to be linking the way you log in to the EE Community with My EE – and you will need to use your My EE login for both (one password less to remember!)

This will be happening on the 5th of August, and in order to ensure you can get into the EE Community quickly and easily after this change happens, we have some tips below on making the process simple and smooth.

What’s going to change?

I don’t have a My EE account at the moment

You will need to register for a My EE account > Don’t worry, as you don’t need to have any products with us in order to have a My EE account; you simply don’t add any products during the quick and easy sign up.

I have a My EE account already – what do I need to do?

Your community account will be associated to your My EE account, which will mean that the email address associated to My EE is where your community notifications will be sent in future.

I don’t want my community notifications to go to the email address associated with my My EE account

There will now only be one email address across My EE and the EE Community and you need to make sure the email address on your My EE is the same one that you want your community notifications to go to.

If you really don't want to receive notifications to that email address then you can register for a separate My EE account but add no products to it.

What if I use different emails for My EE and Community today?

If you want to keep the email you use on community, you will need to change your My EE email to match it>

If you want to have notifications sent to the email address on your My EE account, please change your community email address>

What will it be like to log in to the EE Community once this change has happened?

To log into the community, you will use the main "log in" and "register" buttons in the meganav at the top of the screen.

From here you’ll be taken to the My EE log in and register pages to access the EE Community.

Upon log in you’ll be presented with the My EE dashboard which will have a community tile/button on the far right. When clicked, this will take you back into the community.

Once back in the community all you’ll have to do is enter your EE Community username and password in the box and click submit, and you’ll be in.

The next step is that you will be taken to the community homepage where confirmation of accounts being linked is shown. You’ll see yourself as logged in on the meganav at the top on the right, and the option showing there will be to log out.

What if I can’t remember my EE Community username or password?

The only thing you need to know is the email address that you have registered on the community. If you can’t remember your password, simply click “Forgot password? Verify by email”.

On the next screen you’ll simply need to add the email address linked to the EE Community.

You’ll then be shown the message below:

And you’ll receive an email from My EE. Click on the link in the email which will verify you, link the account and then take you to the homepage (as in the example above), confirming your account has been linked.

HI @BrendonH and @Techhead

I appreciate that this is a change to how you log in - and the time out is a new thing too, but it's a security mechanism that was required as Community is now linked to My EE, so I'm afraid this can't change. Better to have our accounts secure though, I think - as @Chris_B also suggested in his response above.

I use chrome for Community and it has a useful password saver so I don't have to tap my password in each time - it is an extra step. for sure, but it's only a click or 2.

Thanks for your feedback 🙂

The thing is, other communities that are linked to accounts do it differently. eg. My bank.

With those, I stay logged in to the community for longer. BUT if I go to the actual account section I then need to re-enter my password to ensure its secure.

Hi,

Sorry to dig this back up, but for some reason I can't get my accounts to link properly. My email/password definitely works fine on both sides, but I just can't bring up the tool to completely link them.

Is it because I waited too long after the changes?

Thanks!

@Blastoise186 : The fact that you've been able to post here shows that they are linked correctly & you've been auto logged in to this Community.

Thanks,

My login details are definitely unified correctly through the SSO, but on my account dashboard, it still seems to think that I don't have a community account when I actually do, and there's no option I could find to properly link them.

I also noticed that my login sessions aren't synchronising across either. That doesn't seem right.

Thanks though @XRaySpeX  for the reply

@Blastoise186 : MyEE does not show whether you have a Community a/c or not. All MyEE a/c's have the box:

EE Community

Join our EE Community >

regardless of whether you've yet joined it or not. Click on it & either:

  • you'll be taken straight to the Community if you've already joined it, or
  • you'll be invited to join & choose a nick.

You are obviously in the former situation.

What does this mean? Sync'ing across what? Diff browsers will have diff MyEE login states.
