Re: EE WiFi Calling: All you need to know

I'm about to buy a brand new "unlocked" S9+ from ebay UK & I need to do my best to make sure that Wi-Fi calling will work as this is important to me.

Should a standard UK "Unlocked" S9+ coupled with my existing Pay Monthly EE sim work with Wi-Fi calling?

Re: EE WiFi Calling: All you need to know

Hi @hotlips69

A Samsung S9+ purchased from another UK retailer should support WiFi calling, although we cannot guarantee it.

Re: EE WiFi Calling: All you need to know

So it's likely that if I buy a factory unlocked phone direct from Samsung, it should work with wi-fi calling?

Re: EE WiFi Calling: All you need to know

Hello there @hotlips69

Thanks for coming back to us.

As @Christopher_G has advised, we cannot guarantee phones purchased from third parties will support WiFi calling.

Please check when buying a phone from a non-EE retailer whether or not it supports WiFi Calling.

Thanks, Leanne.

Re: EE WiFi Calling: All you need to know

Assuming the Wi-Fi calling may rely on having the EE firmware on the phone for the option to be available, can I simply flash with the stock EE firmware if required?

Yes.

Re: EE WiFi Calling: All you need to know

OK, I have an Honor V10.

I note it's not on the list of "approved" devices from EE for Wifi Calling. I accept that.

It has two SIM cards.

EE and 3

The EE SIM fails to register for Wifi Calling.

The 3 SIM does register and works for Wifi Calling.

The setting for Wifi calling on the Honor V10 appears to be for the phone - it's not per SIM.

If I take my EE SIM out of the Honor V10 and put it in a OnePlus 3 it works for Wifi Calling.

The OnePlus 3 is not an EE approved Wifi Calling device, yet it works.

Wifi Calling does work on the Honor V10, as the 3 SIM card demonstrates.

I accept that the device I'm using isn't on the list, but in principle it *should* work.

Anyone got any clue why it's not working, and what the difference is?

Re: EE WiFi Calling: All you need to know

Hi @plunet and welcome to the community.

I understand your frustration but unfortunately we do not support dual SIM devices.

So our features i.e WIFI calling, 4G calling will not work.

Many thanks,

Lee

Re: EE WiFi Calling: All you need to know

Thanks for the very quick response @Lee_H

The odd thing is that the OnePlus 3 is a dual SIM device.

It also has the same two SIM cards in it - EE and 3

It's not on your approved list.

And it works.

Just out of curiosity - you seem to state that dual SIM devices do not work - is there a reason for this, either technical or policy, that can help the community's understand why this is the case? (even if it actually appears to work in practice on some dual SIM handsets)

Re: EE WiFi Calling: All you need to know

Hi @plunet

Software versions are the main stumbling block.

A lot of dual SIM software does not have functions and features built in.

Many thanks,

Re: EE WiFi Calling: All you need to know

The OnePlus 6 is also a dual SIM device and not on the list of supported phones but there's plenty of evidence on other forums that it works with wifi calling on EE. EE might not 'support' it but that doesn't mean it shouldn't work. I'm having similar frustrations with a newly purchased HTC U12+ with wifi calling not working even though the HTC 10 and U11 had wifi calling working out of the box no matter where the phone was purchased.

Re: EE WiFi Calling: All you need to know

I will not explain how as if you brick your phone I take no responsibility.

You can Google though there are plenty of guides.

I would recommend sammobile.com

Where did you purchase the S9?

Hi there @Twosey

Where did you purchase the device?

Are you with us on pay as you go or pay monthly?

Re: EE WiFi Calling: All you need to know

Hi Leanne, thanks for looking into this for me. I bought the phone second
hand - and as it was unlocked , I assumed it wifi calling would work - my
last phone s7 had it . I have phoned Samsung who looked into the phone and
said it is a carrier issue and that EE should be able to get it working. I
contacted EE, who said they have sent a software message to phone so it
should work - but it doesn't!

Thx

Richard

Re: EE WiFi Calling: All you need to know

You phone has Austrian Three firmware.

You won't receive Wi-Fi calling on this device unless you flash it.
