Top up unexpected error

In US and I have a pay as you go account and top up when I come to London. I attempted to top up and receive "unexpected error" with no increment to available funds. I check my credit card website and charge shows as pending...this happened last time I was in London and this is a new credit card too. please advise as I would rather not close the account and switch carrier

When did you last use this SIM? PAYG SIMs are deactivated after 6 months of inactivity.
