Which phone do you have? I'm guessing it'll be PAYG but when did you get the SIM Card? How did you top up? Was the SIM inactive for 6 months+ prior to this top up?
Depending on the proximity, it may be worth taking your phone to an EE shop as they can check if the SIM is active.
