4G BB with Huawei E5180 LTE cube. Unable to connect to some websites

Hi, I use 4G with Huawei E5180 LTE cube for home BB. Normally fine, but recently have been unable to connect with a couple websites. Web search suggests problem may lie with DNS settings, but I cannot work out how to change them? Any suggestions gratefully received.........

Re: 4G BB with Huawei E5180 LTE cube. Unable to connect to some websites

You haven't gone far enough!

Click on "Properties" at bottom L of window & you will see a scrollable list of networky things. Amongst them is "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)". Click on that & you can

fill in the "Use the following DNS Servers".

The websites are part of the US Gov site NCBI - widely used for science & education purposes. Just get server not found. National Center for Biotechnology Information

Hi @DJH,

Welcome to the EE Community.

Are you still facing the same issue this morning?

Have you tried connecting with more than one device?

Thanks

Re: 4G BB with Huawei E5180 LTE cube. Unable to connect to some websites

Hi James, afraid so, it has been like this for some weeks. Tried on my mobile phone this morning (made sure I was out of range of house wifi) and this didn't connect to the NCBI website either.

Re: 4G BB with Huawei E5180 LTE cube. Unable to connect to some websites

Hi @DJH,

I've just tested the links on an EE mobile and I've been able to load the pages without any issues.

Can you please delete your web browser's cookies and cache and let me know if that helps.

Thanks

Re: 4G BB with Huawei E5180 LTE cube. Unable to connect to some websites

Hi James - thanks for quick reply.

Have cleared Firefox cookies and cache, but still unable to connect:

Hmm. We’re having trouble finding that site.

We can’t connect to the server at blast.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov.

Same with mobile (again, out of range of home wifi). This time with Chrome.

Odd thing is that I've used the website fairly requently over the last 2 years or so without any problem.

Hi @DJH

This is very unusual, I have also tested this myself and it has worked fine.

Have you spoken to our technical team to look into this further?

Many thanks,

Re: 4G BB with Huawei E5180 LTE cube. Unable to connect to some websites

Thanks Lee,

Could the issue be related to DNS setting? - I've seen suggestions on the web that this may restrict access to certain sites.

Best regards....David.

Hi @DJH,

You shouldn't need to change your DNS settings to access a particular website.

Please get in touch with customer services so our technical support team can run through some diagnostics with you.

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks

Re: 4G BB with Huawei E5180 LTE cube. Unable to connect to some websites

If the MBB router has no settings for DNS, then they'll be hard-coded to EE's.

If you have a PC connected to the router the command ipconfig /all might tell you the DNS being used but it's likely that it'll just say 192.168.1.1, the gateway of the router. Like this:

Wireless LAN adapter Wi-Fi:

   Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : MyGroup
   Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165
   Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : ***********
   DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
   Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
   Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : ***********(Preferred)
   IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.9(Preferred)
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
   Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : 22 March 2018 06:52:03
   Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : 28 April 2154 13:47:07
   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
   DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
   DHCPv6 IAID . . . . . . . . . . . : ***********
   DHCPv6 Client DUID. . . . . . . . : ***********
   DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
   NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled

If you have a PC connected to the router you could try & get round this issue by switching the DNS in its adapter settings with 1 of these public DNS:

Open DNS :	208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220
Google DNS:	8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4
Norton DNS:	198.153.192.40 & 198.153.194.40

but they would only affect that device. EE DNS aren't the most reliable.

Re: 4G BB with Huawei E5180 LTE cube. Unable to connect to some websites

Thanks James. Spoke to customer services today. It seems this is a known issue with this website (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) that has been reported by others. Some sort of security that prevents it comnnecting via mobile signals?  I was advised that if I connected my computer to the router by a cable, then that should work (doesn't appear to) or I would need a VPN (don't know what that entails). So pleased I am not the only one to encounter this issue - but still unsure of how to resolve it.

Best regards, David.

Hi @DJH

It might be worth changing your DNS servers to Google DNS to see if this helps.

Re: 4G BB with Huawei E5180 LTE cube. Unable to connect to some websites

Hi Lee,

Thanks for suggestion - but as far as I can see there isn't any option to change DNS on the E5180 cube?

No issue with accessing that website over the O2 mobile network.

No, but you can change DNS on your PC. See my advice in https://community.ee.co.uk/t5/4GEE-WiFi/4G-BB-with-Huawei-E5180-LTE-cube-Unable-to-connect-to-some/m... .

Re: 4G BB with Huawei E5180 LTE cube. Unable to connect to some websites

Do you have a Windows PC? If so,

Go to its Network and Sharing Centre / Network Connections . Click on the adapter you are using to connect to the MBB device, e.g. WiFi.

Then Properties / TCP IPv4 & Fill in "Use the following DNS" with 1 of the pairs I offered you.

Similar settings are available from other OS.

Re: 4G BB with Huawei E5180 LTE cube. Unable to connect to some websites

Hi XRaySpex, thanks for info.

Have navigated through Network & Sharing Centre to Network Connections.

Clicked on the device and get to attached screenImage 1.jpg which displays IPv4 connectivity.

Neither "Properties" nor "Wireless properties" seem to take me to "Use the following DNS"....where have I gone wrong?

Best regards, David.
