Hi. My son has had this issue for few days and no matter what i Google cant find a solution.
Hes got Iphone 5 with ios 12. It keep saying either mobile data error or mobile data update required.
I have tried:
- taking SIM out and clean several times
- restart with wifi or airplane mode off
- tried connect to iTunes on PC but just gives error message cant access this phone
The SIM works fine on an Android phone!
Wifi is fine, but phone outside house is useless.
Please help? Is the phones modem broken or something? Thanks!!

@Jannen You can not access the device with iTunes until you allow the device to be access via iTunes, this is done on the device while connected to iTunes. “Trust this device” “Yes/No.
have you tried a network reset on the device? Goto Setting>General>Reset>Reset Network Setting. The device will restart and you’ll need to put the WiFi passwords back on the device.

Do you have another EE SIM card you could try in the phone?
If another SIM has the same trouble, the next suggestion would be to factory reset the phone.

Hi I just tried on my SIM from my Android phone. Same thing. In iPhone Settings - Mobile Data is totally empty.
There is an error message now on iPhone.: Your iPhone cannot make and receive calls or access mobile data until it has been updated.
It's running 12.3.1 and is up to date.
I could do Factory reset, but I've read you will need to connect to iTunes after that? I tried it but even if I try authorise it cant access it.

If you're unable to connect to iTunes I'd recommend contacting Apple Support.
They will be able to advise further now that we know it's the phone that is causing the problem.
