Will Android 8.0 fix the Nexus 6p bootloop that has me stuck on 6.01?

My Nexus 6p has been stuck on Android 6.01 since being 'fixed' by EE following the dreaded bootloop issue. Will Oreo (8.0) now resolve this issue? Also if it does, will I need to upgrade to 7 first before I'm able to upgrade to 8.0 or can I skip directly to 8.0?

My Nexus 6P updated to Oreo last night.

Why haven't you upgraded it to 7 then? Has it not notified you of an update or have you just avoided it? If it's not notified you of any updates, it may not update to 8 either. I'd try a manual flash, after backing everything up.

If you haven't got Android 7 then you won't get Android 8.

I would do a factry reset to see if it jigs into play.

Re: Will Android 8.0 fix the Nexus 6p bootloop that has me stuck on 6.01?

For the same reason that EE returned it with only 6.01. Android 7 caused
the bootloop on the Nexus. What I really want to know is will 8.0 resolve
the issue? If not, it's not worth me doing anything for the next 6 months
until I can upgrade my handset with something that works on the latest and
future Android versions without bricking itself.

@pinback06 So you do get the notifications to upgrade it, but you've been ignoring them?

It's hard to say what would happen but personally I'd go for a full factory reset first and then manually perform the upgrade. There are plenty of Android forums to help if there's an issue. It's very hard to completely brick a phone nowadays.

@chistery yes that was the advice from the EE shop when it was returned to
me as fixed so despite the notifications I've not upgraded at all. I think
I'll hold fire until some people on here and confirm the problem has gone
away for the Nexus 6p on 8.0. Thanks for the advice!

It may be your phone.

But you will need to upgrade to 7 before you upgrade to 8 unless you flash it manually.

Re: Will Android 8.0 fix the Nexus 6p bootloop that has me stuck on 6.01?

I know it's the phone but not mine specifically. It's the Nexus 6p in
general that has had an issue since Android 7. At least now I know I will
have to do the upgrade to 7 first and then to 8 if and when the time comes.
I will wait for feedback from Nexus 6p owners who have actually done the
upgrade and can confirm that the bootloop is no longer an issue on the new
version.

@chistery did you have Android 7 on your 6P?

Did it get stuck in a bootloop?

Yes I did have 7 but after it bootlooped EE regressed the phone back to 6.

@pinback06

When it got stuck in a botloop did you try a hard factory reset?

EE would revert it back to 6 as the upgrade may have corrupted.

Did EE specifically tell you not to upgrade to 7? As I find this rather bodged job from EE if they did.

Re: Will Android 8.0 fix the Nexus 6p bootloop that has me stuck on 6.01?

Indeed. I'd be concerned about having ignored patches for months. There are lots of vulnerabilities and one of the benefits of Nexus devices is they get fixed quickly.

Poor on EE or their contracted repair centre part.
