Interesting... .I have now tried the above 4-5 times.... I havr tried to add to my other posts but for some reason it keeps deleting it... or one of the team do!
I have my phone in a case, so..
Open the flip case, phone lights up with VOLTE showing
Open the phone app to dial...
In about 5-10 seconds WiFi calling activates...
If I close the case and look after a couple of minutes it goes back to VOLTE...
Open phone again and after a few seconds it shows WiFi calling
Try the above again and it works..
What is making the WiFi calling feature turn on and off? it is as though when you are not using the phone to make a call it turns off, as it is not needed... like a "sleep mode"
Try your and see if that works... I have tried about 7 or 8 times now and everytime it does it...
I have also noticed that the dial green button changes to show WiFi calling..

What phone? Which town are you in?
I have wifi calling set and the icon is always on while I'm sat at home on my BT Infinity wifi connection. When I dial I get the ringing tone almost straight away and no different to when I'm on 4G VoLTE.
Your issue begs the question... are you actually on wifi or does it keep dropping the connection?

Hi
It is a Samsung S8+ and I am just outside York...
It is connected to WiFi, and as I say if I open the phone app after a few seconds, may 5-15 seconds WiFi calling seems to activate..
It updated today to Andoid Pie and it seems a common issue across a lot of networks and phones, with Oreo it was always connected...
It is as if it goes to sleep in Pie until you need it...

How near are you to the router?
11-03-2019 07:54 AM
My router is upstairs, always has been, and ob Oreo no problems..
What I did notice is last night, sitting downstairs I could get WiFi calling to work as stated above after a few seconds... when I sat about 3 feet from the router it would not change to WiFi calling...
So the nearer I was to the router the less chance WiFi calling worked..

Thank you, just replied..

Weird. I'm 2 metres from the router now and the wifi calling icon is on (not making a call). When I was upstairs on the very limit of wifi reception the VoLTE icon came on. So for me when I have a stable wifi connection and properly in range I just get put onto wifi calling. It was the same with Android 8 Oreo.
To me I think your wifi isn't stable enough.
What happens when you're on another wifi point somewhere else (for example in a friend's house or at work)?

Mine seems the other way around, the further away the better chance of WiFi calling...
And Oreo was always OK ..
I will try the company network later 🙂
On my other post, @Christopher_G explains how it now works

To confirm, same at work, no WiFi calling and we have a good WiFi at work...
My post above seems to confirm this is how Android Pie works

Yeah, I read that but for me it literally is how it doesn't work for me.
In fact I've just gone out and come back home and again the wifi symbol is up and I'm not making a call.
There has to be more to it.
EDIT: Although thinking about it mobile reception in my house is next to useless so maybe it's because of that

Maybe, I do get a "not bad" 4G signal at home and maybe upstairs, higher up the signal is slightly better than downstairs which is why it stayed on VOLTE all the time upstairs, only changing between the two downstairs.
I do agree it is a strange thing to do, or at least not give you the option in settings

Just wondering if anyone has an update on this as I'm having the same issues with a Pixel 4. Constantly drops off although a reboot of the phone works, but frustrating.
Google say it's carrier fault.

Good Morning @Paddya.
Thanks for coming to the community.
Does this happen in more than one location when connected to WiFi?
Is your device on the latest software?
Speak soon,
Katie 🙂

Apologies for the delay. Yes it can happen in mulitple places. Most of the time it's working, but then I look back at my phone and it only shows EE instead of EE Wi-fi Calling. I'm in work and again a restart brings it back showing EE Wi-Fi Calling.
Oddly the battery dropped 5% as well by restarting

Hi @Paddya
Your phone prefers using the 4G network, in order to give you high quality HD calls. WiFi calling will kick in if there is no 4G available.
Do you notice a 4G connection when your WiFi calling stops?

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the reply but how comes that when I restart it kicks back in again. I've been out and about on and off wifi all day and it's still active here back in the office which is where it dropped off this morning.

It's hard to say without seeing it happen, @Paddya
If it shows 4G when the WiFi calling drops off, that would explain it. After you restart, your phone could be connecting to 3G instead of 4G.
Could you keep an eye and let me know if that's what is happening?

Went to bed last night all ok, woken this morning and gone back to showing just EE. Restart phone and all ok again.

Hi @Paddya,
This sounds like your phone is just switching between WiFi and 4G Calling as the signal strength in your location varies.
When you restart your phone, there may be a slight delay in connecting to 4G, causing it to default to WiFi Calling.
Thanks
James
