Google find my phone not working on Huawei P20 Pro

Last night I misplaced my Huawei P20 pro in my house. When I awoke this morning, I knew that it was still charged, so I tried to locate it with Google's "Find my phone" service. To my surprise, Google reported that my phone was offline (last seen 8 hours ago) so I assumed that the battery had gone flat after all.

When I eventually found the phone, I was suprised to see that it still had 25% charge, so I wondered why it hadn't been located by Google. I noticed that the phone seemed to have restarted as it was asking for my PIN. When I unlocked the phone, I was amazed as it begin ringing and Google then reported that "my device has been located".

This is a bit disconcerting as it implies that the find my phone service won't work on the Huawei P20 Pro in the event of a restart. I checked that the Google "find my device" is already an administrator in "Security & Privacy" and that Google Play Services is not being optimised / is being managed manually in app launch.

I tested the scenario again by re-starting phone and I can confirm that "find my phone" doesn't work until I unlock the device. This makes the service pretty useless on this device. Please could someone else with the Huawei P20 Pro test this? I'm wondering if a factory reset might fix this... Thanks

Re: Google find my phone not working on Huawei P20 Pro

Hi @kurtph1969

This is normal as per the Google account instructions

Find, lock, or erase a lost Android device

If you lose an Android phone or tablet, or Wear OS watch, you can find, lock, or erase it. If you've added a Google Account to your Android device, Find My Device is automatically turned on.

To use Find My Device, your lost device must:

  • Be turned on
  • Be signed in to a Google Account
  • Be connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi
  • Be visible on Google Play
  • Have Location turned on
  • Have Find My Device turned on

If the phone is locked the it cannot be used without the lock code.

Thanks

Hi @Northerner,

Thank you for the reply. This is not the way find my phone operated on my previous Android devices (e.g. Samsung Galaxy S6). Indeed, I have just tested it on my old HTC Desire HD. I restarted it and with the PIN lock on, I was able to ring, locate and erase the device WITHOUT unlocking it!

If what you said was the case, a potential thief could simply re-start the phone and then wipe it later and you would be none the wiser (albeit that would be hard to do on the Huawei P20 Pro as the bootloader is locked).

I await feedback from other Huawei P20 Pro users, but as I said before this worries me that something in EMUI's non-proprietary code is blocking Google Play Services after a re-start.

Re: Google find my phone not working on Huawei P20 Pro

@James_B  i'd like to raise this as a serious issue with EE please. This is a major  flaw in the Huawei EMUI operating system. I have fully reset my Huawei P20 Pro and the issue is still present: if the phone restarts, Google find my phone does not work! Furthermore, other parts of the phone are affected such as texts and notifications are also blocked.

I've tested this on another Android device: my partner's Moto G4 and I can confirm that find my phone is fully working after a restart on that device with PIN lock present.

Please could this issue be escalated to your development team and Huawei? Thanks

Re: Google find my phone not working on Huawei P20 Pro

Can't say I'd noticed this but I've never used Google locate. I do have lookout installed but thankfully also never had to use it as yet.

The fact of notifications not coming through is probably intentional as it's sort of a security thing incase device is stolen and restarted. It's more the accidental restarts that are annoying (hold power button force restart) I've done that twice in my pocket in two weeks
