Unstructured Supplementary Service Data
In non technical terms it's a code that tells a network to do something (that's particular to that network). eg. A network might respond *#147# with a message giving the number of the last caller. Also sometimes used to give account balance.
(In a bit more detail - a subset of MMI codes. Unlike the codes for setting diverts etc, USSD are not standardised and specific to the host network if supported at all.)
