EE Tablet & 4GEE WiFi SIM Only 30 days £30.00 30GB plan and VPN pain

Hi all,

I've purchased the "EE Tablet & 4GEE WiFi SIM Only 30 days £30.00 30GB plan" today as I need to be able to connect on my laptop to a VPN on the go
and as EE has got the fastest 4G (LTE-A or I think they call it 4G+) network in the UK and the price plan has got network speed as "Our fastest 4G"
and latency should be low and the VPN connection should work well, but .........
the VPN does not work at all.

I am using Dell Wireless 5809e Gobi 4G LTE aka Sierra Wireless AirPrime EM7305 modem and according to the spec. EM series are LTE-A capable

https://www.sierrawireless.com/products-and-solutions/embedded-solutions/networking-modules/

with the below settings:
Access Point Name: everywhere
Username: eesecure
Password: secure
Network Type Preset to IPv4 and IPv6
Authentication: PAP
Leaving the username/password empty does not work as mentioned in some forums.
The internet access works, but looks there is something not right there, some websites work well,
while most others are bit slow.

http://www.netmeter.co.uk website does not work!
Some of the other websites I have tried do not load at all, but they do with three.co.uk SIM card and via VDSL connection and WiFi 😞

Is the internet in some way filtered by the EE?

When I insert my Pay Monthly Three.co.uk SIM card into the laptop,
I get the VPN working without any problem both with their three.co.uk and 3internet APN's!
But I need the SIM card in my phone and Wi-Fi HotSpot is not an option, hence that's why I purchased the EE SIM.

I have tried as well:
Name: T-mobile.UK user.pass
APN: general.t-mobile.uk
Username: user
Password: pass
Network Type Preset to IPv4 and IPv6
Authentication: PAP
But that does not connect to internet with the EE SIM

Name: T-mobile.UK t-mobile.tm
APN: general.t-mobile.uk
Username: t-mobile
Password: tm
Network Type Preset to IPv4 and IPv6
Authentication: PAP
This does not work, and no connection is established.

Name: T-mobile.UK empty.empty
APN: general.t-mobile.uk
Username: empty
Password: empty
Network Type Preset to IPv4 and IPv6
Authentication: PAP
This does not work either.

So I have turned to Orange APN's to see if that can solve my problem as per post over here:
https://community.ee.co.uk/t5/4G-and-mobile-data/Problems-since-IPv6-upgrade-IPv4-DHCP-failing/m-p/5...

Name: OrangeInternet empty.empty
APN: orangeinternet
Username: empty
Password: empty
Network Type Preset to IPv4 and IPv6
Authentication: PAP
But no luck, no connection can be established.

I have found Ornage VPN APN:
Name: Orange.UK.VPN
APN: internetvpn
Username: orange
Password: orange
Network Type Preset to IPv4 and IPv6
Authentication: PAP
This does not work either, so I feel that I have exhausted all the options, so is there any special APN settings in order for use with VPN?

Hi @noCGN,

Welcome to the EE Community.

It's the standard EE APN settings that you need to use.

How does it perform when running a speed test?

Which VPN protocol are you using? IPsec, SSL or PPTP?

Thanks

James

Re: EE Tablet & 4GEE WiFi SIM Only 30 days £30.00 30GB plan and VPN pain

Hi James_B,

The one you did not mention 🙂 "OpenVPN" running on non standard TCP port 995.

I think the problem is that the VPN server is IPv4 only!

So is there a APN that I can get old good IPv4 IP address?

Hi @noCGN,

There's not a different APN I'm afraid.

Have you tried speaking to your VPN provider's support team?

Thanks

James

Re: EE Tablet & 4GEE WiFi SIM Only 30 days £30.00 30GB plan and VPN pain

Hi @James_B

Talk to my VPN provider support about what exactly?

It works over classic ADSL/VDSL lines, it works via Three.co.uk mobile network, but it does not work over EE network 🙂

Shame,

can I cancel the SIMcard?, I will get Three UK data SIM instead.

Re: EE Tablet & 4GEE WiFi SIM Only 30 days £30.00 30GB plan and VPN pain

Just been told to use:

Name: OrangeInternet eesecure.secure
APN: orangeinternet
Username: eesecure
Password: secure
Network Type Preset to IPv4 only
Authentication: PAP
But no luck, no connection can be established ....

The guy on technical line was certain that username and password should be Username: eesecure / Password: secure for the APN: orangeinternet, is that right, anyone?

Sorry, @Richard_C, I'm not up on APNs, but I think the 1st, EE, one that OP posted would be right. I wouldn't be using an Orange APN on an EE device.

I also have observed that EE using IPv6 on its network has caused issues with connecting to some servers or remote devices. If possible try to force IPv4.

Thank you for your help with this one @XRaySpeX

At least we have something to go on and it would be great if any other users can share experiences and knowledge on this.

In the meantime I will ask some questions at this end to see if I can find out something.

Cheers

Re: EE Tablet & 4GEE WiFi SIM Only 30 days £30.00 30GB plan and VPN pain

Hi @noCGN,

I've had a chat with our network team and they are aware of an IPv6 issue that was recently resolved by Open VPN.

The issue was fixed in Open VPN version 2.4.X. (meaning version 2.3.X will still be broken when in an IPv6 network).

The Open VPN client needs to be set to dualstack mode, which is now the default setting. If the client is set to IPv4 (perhaps because the VPN server is IPv4) then it won’t work when IPv6 is available.

Are you able to check which version you are using and see if you can update to a newer version if necessary?

Thanks

James

Re: EE Tablet & 4GEE WiFi SIM Only 30 days £30.00 30GB plan and VPN pain

Hi

Nope, not working with my Tablet & 4GEE WiFi SIM Only plan SIM card 😞

The only one that works is the IPv6 only:

Access Point Name: everywhere
Username: eesecure
Password: secure
Network Type Preset to IPv4 and IPv6
Authentication: PAP

and that would only give me IPv6.

Re: EE Tablet & 4GEE WiFi SIM Only 30 days £30.00 30GB plan and VPN pain

Hi James_B,

I have been send this, so that indicated version 2.3.2

# /usr/sbin/openvpn --version
OpenVPN 2.3.2 mips-unknown-linux-gnu [SSL (OpenSSL)] [LZO] [EPOLL] [eurephia] [MH] [IPv6] built on May 10 2017

but, I have done more tests, and put the SIM card into my old GT-I9195 where all the APN's orangeinternet IPv4 only / APN: general.t-mobile.uk IPv4 only and APN: everywhere IPv6 only worked.

How come, that mobile phone will let me connect to all 3 and from laptop I can only connect to 1??????

That had a positive result and solved me not being able to access add-on.ee.co.uk | eeebdc.prod.t-motion.co.uk at all from my laptop with the 4G/LTE modem, which I can now access from all the devices, so something must have been triggered there, by me inserting the SIM into the phone, and I think it was PAYG phone from EE as well.

I have then done further tests in one of my old laptops that has got 3G modem build in the "Dell Wireless DW5540 | Ericsson F3607gw v2 Mobile Broadband Module" I have been able to successfully connect to only "2" of the APN's, APN's orangeinternet IPv4 only and APN: everywhere unfortunately IPv6 only. But I have not got the VPN set up there, so could not check.

So again, what is going on here? 2 APN's, so why not the third one?

However, when I got the SIM back into my laptop with the 4G/LTE modem build in, the only APN that works is the APN: everywhere unfortunately IPv6 only.!!!!!!

I will, when I have time try on my old laptop where I can connect to APN orangeinternet IPv4 only set up the VPN settings and see if it works and report back.

So far, my impression with EE has been highly negative. Looks like 4G (4GEE Plan) customers are being forced onto this IPv6 ONLY network and no one cares and I say it again, if you use modem that has not been supplyed by EE or possibly the IMEI is not in their database, you will be facing problems, so aviod at all cost.

Re: EE Tablet & 4GEE WiFi SIM Only 30 days £30.00 30GB plan and VPN pain

Hello @noCGN are you connecting to 2G, 3G or 4G?

I tested the Orange APN settings on EE, T-Mobile and Orange lines and these were my results:

https://community.ee.co.uk/t5/Email/Orange-Email-Closing-EDIT-the-closure-date-is-31st-May-2017/m-p/...

They work fine on 3G only but sporadic on 2G. I did not test 4G at the time. 🙂

Re: EE Tablet & 4GEE WiFi SIM Only 30 days £30.00 30GB plan and VPN pain

Hi @noCGN,

I've had an update from the network guys to say they have raised a change to fix the issue from our end.

It should be implemented in the next week or so.

In the meantime, are you able to contact your VPN provider to see if you can update to 2.4.X?

Thanks

James

Hi James_B,

I have asked and the answer was no, so at the moment it's 2.3.x 😞

Any update on the fix?

Hi Tom222,

I have tested those other APN's in "4G" only and none apart of "everywhere" works 😞

Can't find what you're looking for?

One of these options may help you find the answers you need.
