Porting number within EE

I have two SIM cards for EE. Both in contracts but mine ends soon.

one ends in 6 months and I’m going to take over the newest plan. But i want to keep my old number when the contract finishes

from the past there has been a way to turn it into a payg and then port the number over

is this still possible or is there an easier way? Or can this not be done now as the second sim is already active? Thanks
