has anyone else had calls saying ee is updating sim only to 5g and need to do it now , the email plus calls seemed dodgy?

In short, this is nonsense. There's a few variations of this scam, but you can safely treat these callers with the contempt they deserve.

Report them by texting CALL followed by the number, to 7726 (SPAM on your phone's keypad)

It could be an old 3G SIM & as 3G has been switched off last year it would be better to update it to 5G. How long have you had this SIM & what EE plan was it on?

What does 1 of these emails look like obscuring your personal details?

It's a possible, but neither Orange nor EE SIMs have ever been "G" specific. Even the current process of some pre-2021 SIMs only supporting 5G in NSA mode, is a reactive one and not done via email or text message.

I believe the move from Orange to EE 3G plans was 'G' limited. Hence my post.

Your recollection is different from mine, but the substantive point remains that SIM replacements have always been reactive.

Anything proactive like this, reeks of scam. This will be some variation on the scammer wanting control of your number, and attempting to achieve it by means of getting a new SIM.

That, or accidentally-on-purpose ordering you a new contract.

O2 have been phoning/emailing my wife to upgrade her SIM. I've told her not to bother as it's good enough for her 2G feature phone.

the email just had ,to you on it no email or name that's another reason i felt something wasn't quite right and the phone call she was very insistent that i opened my email straight away so she could walk me through it , iv had the sim only plan a few years now

Did you catch the number that the call came from?

What email address was the email sent from?

That'll be able to tell us for sure if it is something that we use.

If you received this via email, it will have been sent from an email address. Look at the "from" line

Reputable organisations would usually address you by name if you're an existing customer, so a lack of that is certainly a rer flag.
