Upgrading to a sim contract, will I have to change the SIM card

I have come to the end of my current EE contract which is £32 and want to change to an exclusive online offer which will make my monthly payments significantly cheaper. However, I have added the product through the upgrade route to my basket and it is saying "physical sim" - that to me makes me think I will be sent a new sim? This seems really antiquated as I am simply changing contracts. I have tried speaking to EE on the phone but they cannot see this offer as its an online exclusive.

As long as you have "upgraded" rather than ordered a new line, then this - as you suggest - is just a priceplan change and is entirely account-based.

There is no need to replace a perfectly working SIM in this scenario.

When I telephoned EE they said "make sure its not an additional line", I have gone through it again, through the upgrade and it is showing my number and its an upgrade to that. I was also thrown with the "multi sim" and EE said to me on the phone " that sounds like a new line" ; I have since googled this and a multi sim is a sim that comes in 3 sizes. I think they just didn't want me to take out this cheaper exclusive deal, and pay more as they could only offer my a plan which was £4 more a month and without EU roaming. So even if a SIM is sent out given its saying "physical sim", I wont have to put in the phone?

Welcome to the Community!

When you upgrade your phone, normally we wouldn't need to send you out a new SIM unless you're changing to a device that needs a different size; this is also why we provide multi-SIMs.

If you're still unsure, please feel free to pop up a screenshot of the checkout page, masking any personal details such as your number etc.

Don't forget that if there was any error and this went through as a new line, it can be cancelled at any point within the first 14 days, too.

Thanks very much for the screenshot @tasha17y

This does show upgrading and I have tested this myself and my upgrade to a SIM Only plan shows the same, as this is a SIM plan and no device.

You sometimes may be sent a new SIM card if you're old SIM is not ready for all services that comes with your new plan. If you do get a new SIM sent you're current SIM should stay active until this arrives and you register the SIM card with the same number.

Is there anyway to avoid a plan without a possible new sim, as I don't want to have to put a new sim in really and have the faff of that. I am not very good with things like that.

Hi @tasha17y

This would be sent automatically if this is needed. However, if the SIM is sent unregistered you can choose when to register and swap this over in the device.

If you want to make sure no SIM is sent you would need to contact our mobile guides for the upgrade and they can see if this would be possible for you.

Unfortunately I have tried speaking to EE on the phone about 5 times now, and none of them have been able to help me which is why I came on here, where I have got a lot more answers.

I think I may just risk it and if I get a new sim then i'll have to sort out. The best deal they can give me over the phone for the same plan without EU roaming is £18 and the plan I can get online with EU roaming is £14 so its a no brainer really.

Thanks Leanne. Also I have a 4g Iphone 11 , so maybe that's why a new sim will come out but hopefully I can just keep the same sim in the phone as my phone isnt 5g.

You will get an email to let you know the SIM card has been dispatched, if this is being sent out to you.

They can take 2-5 working days to arrive 🙂
