EE texted me about 3 weeks ago to inform me I had not used the phone for calls or texts and therefore my account would be closed. This was wrong as I had texted the previosu day. The problem appeared to be that I now needed a 4G simcard and they promsed to send one to arrive within 3 to 4 days. One week on it has not arrived.

Is this a normal delay?

Secondly can I go to an EE store and ask them to provide a new 4G simcard and transfer the blaance etc?

@carrotmuseum2 : Are you on contract or PAYG?

If PAYG, perhaps your PAYG SIM has gone into hibernation.

When did you previously make a chargeable action? EE PAYG SIMs are deactivated after 6 months of non-chargeable use. You then have a further 3 months period of grace to call EE to reactivate it before it is lost completely.

You needed to make a chargeable action like making a chargeable call or text, topping up or buying a Pack or Add-on, not just using your mins, texts or data from your pack.

To add to the reply already, what's the basis for saying that you needed a "4G SIM"? Was this what a CS agent told you?

All of EE's SIMs are multi-technology, none are specific to any "G"

You must have an EE 3G SIM, probably from being transferred from an old Orange or T-M plan & this msg is warning you that as the 3G network is being switched off that you need to get a 4G SIM.

Yes and they would send one within 4 days. All I have to do is put it in
the new 4G phone and it will retain the credit balance.

Clearly the sim is late coming. What I ask is can I get the new 4G sim
from the EE shop and can they do the transfer of credit?

Yes, if you pop into the EE Store, they'll be able to provide you a replacement SIM card and get it all set up for you. You'll need some photo ID with you.
