topic Scam in Security

Hello, I thought I'd share an attempted scam attempt today. I received a call from mobile number 07301256293 saying he was calling from EE and wanted to inform me they were upgrading a system and some customers had old SIMs that required updating. In order to process the dispatch and ensure it would be sent to my home address he asked to verify my email address to bring up my account to complete the transaction. Next he asked to confirm my email address to ensure he was sending it to the correct person. He also the new SIM wouldnt cost anything and added it would also include unlimited data and calls when abroad. He went onto say he has sent the email and to verify my email address. I looked at the email which was very convincing, however it was also titled password change request which contained a numerical passcode. I mentioned this to the male who tried to convince me it was only to verify my email address and could I give him the code. I refused several times and questioned him that if he knew my email address and had

my mobile number why was he unable to bring up my account. He subsequently said he has found a way to access the account and will pass me onto the dispatch team. Less than a minute later a second male came onto the phone stating he was from the dispatch team and he was sending me an email for confirmation. He then asked for the code and again I refused. The call was promptly terminated by them.

I have uploaded the email. Who can spot the irony between the email and what the caller was trying to do.

The link to EEs website provided a domain name which couldn't be reached www.awin1.com rather than going through to EEs website.

Red Flags.

1. Voice changer was used although initially I put it down to translator software which may be used by overseas call centres. But it niggled.

2. If they had my mobile and email why couldn't they bring up my account.

3. Email with password change request, then being requested to provide the passcode.

4. The mobile number used must be a clean one as I have two separate DNS VPNs secured to my phone which didn't flag anything suspicious.

Apologies for the long post 😊

Hi @CharlieCY,

Thanks for sharing this. It certainly sounds like a well-rehearsed social engineering attempt rather than a genuine call from EE.

You did the right thing by not giving them the one-time PIN, as this could have been used to access your account.

If you don't mind, could you log the call on our Report a scam call so our fraud team can get this investigated?

You can find more information about how to stay safe on our How to avoid scams web page.
