Sounds kosher. It comes from a shortcode that EE uses & there's no suspect link to click in it.

EE are currently prompting some customers with older SIMs to upgrade so they can benefit from 5G Standalone,

When I reply Yes as it advises it says it will cause charges on my mobile account. Surely this shouldn't happen if directly from EE? Thanks

I understand your concern about receiving spam messages, but I can confirm that this is a message from EE regarding 5G standalone. If yu would feel more comfortable upgrading your SIM with one of our guides then you absolutely can reach out to them, and they'll be happy to help.

Does the message that pops up have an image of some coins, with the option to Cancel / Send?

If so that is a standard generic warning shown by your mobile device that will pop up for all messages you send to any 4/5/6 digit number, irrespective of the cost of the message.
These numbers are called "Short-code" numbers and are often used for alternative services, such as competitions and information, which can incur a charge outside of your free-to-send SMS allowance.
