Just had a call from a nice Geordie man from an 0191 number saying he was from EE. He knew my first name, so foolishly when he asked me to confirm my full name, I did so.

He said he would text a PIN to me and wanted me to tell him the number, but I hung up.

The text with the pin came through on the same text thread as previous marketing texts from EE, but I know scammers can make it look like texts come from genuine numbers.

Was this a scam or have I inadvertently offended that nice young man?

EE have call centres in the NorthEast, but they wouldn't be calling from an 0191 number for the most part and this was very likely a third party trying to gain access to your account.

You did absolutely the right thing in refusing to disclose the PIN, if the "nice young man" was offended then tough luck!!

However that does not mean all 0191 numbers will be legitimate. You can see here for a list of the numbers: https://ee.co.uk/help/profile/manage/phone-calls-from-our-partners

Just had the exact same call and did what you did. Called EE through 150 and they confirmed that no one from EE has accessed my account by the name given to me. Apparently whenever an employee accesses your account/searches you number, then it loggs that.
