I’ve had a call 4 times today from an 0191 number and it comes up as EE on the caller ID. I answered it the 4th time and the guy said he was from EE in Newcastle and wanted to speak to me about some deals on my account. He called me by my first name but then said he needed to send me a 4 digit PIN code via email and I then need to tell him this PIN code to pass security. I ended the call as I wasn’t comfortable with this.

Does anyone know if this was legit or a scam?

What was the full landline number you received the call from?

It sounds like business-caller-ID kicked in here, if the CLI was "EE Guide calling" or somesuch. All that said, if you weren't 100% comfortable with the identity of the caller, then you did absolutely the right thing in refusing disclosure of the OTP & ending the call.

All things considered, I suspect this call was genuine - but confirmation of the full number would be useful. Contacting EE back on their published number (150 from your mobile) is always the safe & recommended follow-up.

You're right to be cautious. In this case, the number that called you is used by our direct partner, Inspired. They promote services on behalf of EE. 🙂
