My voicemail has messaged from action fraud

This is a bit of a strange one...

My wife called me today and I missed call, she said instead of normal voicemail, it said that my number has been connected to fraud and to contact Action Fraud on their phone number. I thought she was winding. Me up and asked her to call again when she was home and this time it didn't happen. Thought nothing of it.

My son called me tonight and I rejected the call as I was driving and just pulling into the street. The same message happened and he panicked. When I got in we tried again and got normal message. He then tried it again and the action fraud message happened, I heard it this time.

Has anyone else experienced this? I tried to call EE but couldn't get to speak to anyone. I also tried the action fraud number but it's closed. Bit perplexed with it all tbh. I am not involved in any fraud, and I'm sure if I was I wouldn't be using the phone number I have had for almost 20 years!!!!

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks for the reply.

I don't have the exact wording, as it's not doing it now.

It was along the lines of

"This number has been blocked due to being connected to fraudulent calls. If this person contacts you please contact Action Fraud on #...….."

I haven't had any issues with my phone or numbers connecting to me, just certain times with rejected or unanswered calls. We just tried again there and it goes straight to normal voicemail 😩🙈

I never caught the number, but did sound similar to the action fraud number on their website.

Is there a way of my number being cloned to use for spam calls?

Yeah I went on the action fraud website and dialled the number on there. Not the number that was on the message.

0300 123 2040 that's the number I called, on my call log it is under GDPR Checker🤷🏻‍♂️

Have u got an app called Mask Off? To unblock withheld numbers, by any chance? My mate did a bit of digging online and asked me that...I did actually have the app after getting prank calls for weeks a few months ago.

The app is no longer available to download in UK.

In meantime I have turned off my voicemail.

Hi. I have had a similar experience. My EE number had been 'spoofed' so I phoned EE and they said, just don't answer any incoming call if you don't recognise the number, as that shows the scammer that yours is an active number. With hindsight I should just have changed numbers at that point. What I actually did was a) follow this advice, and b) phone ActionFraud - though I have a feeling that they charged me £7 for reporting, which doesn't sound right, does it?
Anyhow, the next thing I knew, my voicemail had a message on it to callers telling them to phone Warwickshire Police!
When I changed my number, for other reasons, a few months later, the EE assistant said she didn't think EE had put this message on my line, but I couldn't think who else could have done this?

When a caller withholds their number, the recipient network should not send it to the recipient phone - thus no app should be capable of doing this, the signalling data is not present.

If a network is sending caller-ID when it's been withheld, that's a data breach.
