I have a simm only account with EEfor 5gB and pay £6.47 a month by direct debit from my bank account.

I discovered this morning that on 27 July someone else accessed my EE account, passed security, and ordered a new simm card to be sent to an address in London (I live in Sussex). Yesterday, I was unable to get my phone (Samsung A34) to access the EE network and after speaking to them this morning, discovered the fraud. EE have suspended my account, cancelled the sim card sent to the fraudster and are sending me a new simm card.

Am I right in thinking that all the fraudster can have hoped to gain was the £6.47 a month paid from my bank account? It hardly seems worth all the effort for such a small amount. Or, can anyone think of any other way the fraudster can gain for what they have done? So far, EE are unable to suggest any way they can.

They couldn't get the £6.47 a month you pay for your SIM as it paid on a DD directed to EE by your bank.

They would've gained a free SIM & plan paid similarly to EE by you.

Thanks XRaySpeX. Yes, I realise they couldn't get the £6.47 a month, but presumably my bank would have continued paying for their simm card had I not got it stopped this morning, but that's all they could have hoped for isn't it?

Yes, as EE would've raised the amount of the DD as per their fraudulent order, if it hadn't been caught in time. Then you'd be able to put in a Fraud Claim with your bank.
