Smart Hub SH31B WAN socket

Could someone advise me please, what is the function of the WAN socket when the Hub is connected to the ONT? And does this function change when DHCP is turned off?

To connect the router to the source of the BB, in this case to the ONT. DHCP doesn't come into it. That's for providing local IP addys in the LAN.

If the WAN socket connects direct to the ONT, does this replace the Hub's own access to the ONT for routing clients connected to the ethernet sockets?

Surely there can't be two separate connections.

@RG999 there is only one connection between the ONT and router, and that is via the WAN port.

This is purely an academic question. I haven't used the Hub, I connected my Draytek router directly to the ONT on day one and it's working fine.

I was just trying to understand the function of the two sockets on the Hub, Broadband and WAN. Not ever having connected it, I had assumed the Broadband socket was for the ONT connection, which led to my question about the WAN socket.

So how is the Broadband socket used?

@RG999 ah ok, that one is easy, like may routers it also has a built in modem for DSL lines, so the broadband socket is for ADSL/VDSL broadband delivered via the telephone line, the WAN socket if you are using an external modem, such as the ONT whish is a fibre modem.

The Hub is now back in its box and put away in case it's ever needed for line testing.

The Broadband socket (colour grey) is an RJ11 socket for connecting to DSL BB (FTTC or ADSL) from a phone socket, possibly via a DSL filter.

The WAN socket (colour red) is an Ethernet RJ45 socket for connecting to Full Fibre BB (FTTP) from an ONT. It can also be used to connect to another router or modem that has its own WAN source of BB of any type.

They are both WAN sockets that are used either/or depending on the source of the BB but not together.
