Not getting 2.5G connection, only 1000 mbps with 1.6Gbps package

I have recently had the 1.6Ggps broadband fitted but can only get around 940 Mbps.

I am using an ASUS Router GT-BE98 that has multiple 2.5G and 10G connections with a Cat 7 cable going directly to my PC with a ROG Maximus Hero Z790 motherboard which has a 2.5 G built-in Intel 1226-V ethernet controller (with updated drivers). I have changed the cable going from the open reach box to the ASUS Router to Cat 7. I have changed my PC ethernet controller Advanced options to 2.5 Gbps Full Duplex but I can still only get around 940 Mbps and the Link Speed in the Windows settings shows 1000/1000 (Mbps).

Can anyone help please?

Are you sure you have the 2.5 Gig ONT fitted there?

.What does the router report as its WAN connection speed?

If windows reports your LAN is only at 1gig then it doesn't matter about the WAN side until you resolve the LAN issue.

I didn't realise there were different types of ONT and assumed if I was being offered 1.6 Gbps it would be capable of that. Can you tell from the picture please?

Thanks - any ideas what issues would cause the lan to show as 1000Mbps when all the hardware supports 2.5G?

From what I can see this is a Nokia ONT and if the connection is orange it should be 2.5G Model. I think this looks orange.....

Obviously if the WAN is limited to 1 Gig nothing else can run at more than 1 Gig. Then there's no LAN issue and the root cause is the limited speed WAN i.e. a 1 Gig ONT.

Which ports are you using on the router? From the specs:

1 x 10Gbps for WAN/LAN
1 x 2.5Gbps for WAN/LAN
1 x 10Gbps for LAN
3 x 2.5Gbps for LAN
1 x RJ45 10/100/1000Mbps for LAN

I would start with the ONT in the 2.5Gb WAN/LAN port, and your PC on one of the 2.5Gb LAN ports, and check the router has negotiated both at 2.5Gb.

I beleive someone had a similar issue which was down to using the wrong ports.

Still worth checking router's WAN connection speed. Then you'll know which side the issue lies on. For all you know EE may only be sending you 1 Gig BB.

@paulmccarrison2 that pic suggests that the ethernet ports that are connected are connected at optimal speeds. On my Asus at least I have two devices that are only 100Mbps and they show up as Orange/Amber on the status page.

I have not found a way to show the actual connection speed of each port.

The link above has the picture of the nokia ont, If yellow it is 1Gb/s and if orange then it is 2.5Gb/s. You are going to have to take a close look at it, just be very careful not to damage the fibre cable connection.

OK so I have been on to the EE team that deal with the 1.6 Gbps service and am confused by their response. They are telling me that despite using my own router that is capable of 2.5G I will not be able to get over 1Gbps through any ethernet connection and the advertised extra 1.6Gbps is only a WiFi service. Is this right? I thought I was signing up for a service that would give me up to 1.6Gbps through my ethernet LAN.

I have done more testing with my Laptop and Mac using a 2.5G USB connector and still maxing out at 900Mbps.

Can someone please confirm that the 1.6Gbps service should be available through ethernet?

@paulmccarrison2 No, that is utter BS, of course you should be able to get above 1Gb on an router/port with a 2.5Gb port.

Alas however as you have found out they will be unlikley to know anything other than some details of the EE router.

@paulmccarrison2 Yes you will get over the 1Gb/s on ethernet, and have you looked at the ONT socket yet for the colour. Until you get windows sync to be above the 1000/1000 you reported earlier. 2.5Gb/s is negotiated by the ethernet connection, plug it into the wan of the ont and see if it will sync at 2.5gb/s.

Sounds like they think you are still using the EE SH+. Their description fits that exactly.

I still ask you for the router's WAN connection speed. That will pin it down. Please post a pix of the router's WAN status page.

I put the EE router back in and called them back and they think my account may not have been set up correctly. I am awaiting a call back at some point. The connector on the ONC looks orange so it should be Ok so hopefully EE have been giving me the incorrect service and I can get it sorted out.

Maybe I’m colour blind but that looks yellow to me. Did a BT engineer install a new ONT when you upgraded to this package? We have a Gigabit ONT atm…but an engineer is coming on Monday to install a new one.

@TechManMax I am going with yellow also, if not then we are both colour blind.... Was going to post the model but that means taking it of the wall to see the type on the back.
