So I had my Openreach ONT replaced for a 2.5gb version Wednesday last week. Minus a blip Wednesday afternoon the speed tests had been 1.6gbps upwards until Saturday night. since then I've dropped to 160mbps to 230mbps from the network to the Superhub Plus. Got an Openreach engineer coming Wednesday but I wonder if I'm now in this circuit of Openreach saying no it's not us and EE saying it's not us. I don't want to keep having the Smarthub replaced as that means reconnecting 50 devices and 3 boosters.

Yes I did read the reviews on here but kind of hoped that any issues had been resolved due to how far EE was now into the 'trial'

@DaveI-88 As you are using the EE Smarthub+ as your router you can expect approx 900mb/s on an ethernet connected device, and up to max speed on a wireless wifi6 AX connected, With the speed mentioned i have to assume you were trying a high speed wireless test, you need to have all other wi-fi devices off when testing. Below some info regarding the fibre.

1. FTTP is a contended service, up to 32 users can be sharing the 2.5Gb backhaul, so you can never expect the full speed all the time, you may get 900mb when there are fewer people using it. I expect that you are sharing the backhaul with many users. If everyone was using it fully, you may only get 78mbs. Its called statistical multiplexing, which relies on the fact that all users are not utilising their connection fully, all of the time.

BT quote up to 900mb, so you are likely to get much less than that during peak times.

Speed tests pass very little data, so normally give a much higher speed.

2. The max OR connect to a splitter is 30 ( 32 is the splitter maximum but policy is 30 ) not every CBT port provided is likely to have a customer using it , so unless on a ‘new site’ that has no alternatives to OR FTTP the actual number on a splitter is likely to be way less , OR currently have about a 30% take up, so maybe 10 users per splitter , plus the majority don’t take 900Mb but slower profiles , and the chances of those ‘on line ‘ at any one time all and doing something intensive, rather than browsing / Netflix that may be consuming less than 30-100Mb , is slim , that’s why there is a 700Mb minimum speed guarantee on 900Mb …..the 2.4Gb will be plenty ,you would have to be incredibly unlucky to have any consistent congestion.

If you suspect PON congestion, try at a time when there won’t be much activity, late evening or early morning .

Although you have tried somethings to ‘ isolate’ the problem , the most obvious thing to do ( that you haven’t apparently tried ) is use the BT router , without doing that , you haven’t really proved anything , your third party router may great , but even great routers can be mis configured or faulty

Speed test at 0130 in the morning, was 180mbps. Surely the testing method WiFi or Ethernet doesn’t matter because the issue is the speed to the hub. I’m not concerned with any of the WiFi speeds but the actual speed to the router

You have 1.6Gb/s package, this is shared with ALL of your devices, so there is no way of knowing what they are doing at any one point in time, ie that is why you switch off all wireless to test with only one device. Once you know how your home is you can compensate by taking a relative amount off. The OR engineer will remove your connection and test from the ONT onwards for the speed test.

Sorry don’t know if it’s me not being clear or you not understanding.

my issue is not with the speed of the WiFi to the devices itself. The issue is the speed of the ‘network’ as in the FTTP network to the actual router. My screenshot previously sent is the speed that they physical fttp is downloading and uploading before it gets to my devices. I’m well aware that the 1.3gbps minimum speed is split out amongst the 50 devices on the WiFi but the speed before it splits out isn’t what it should be.

reading other comments on the forum this is a common issue a few days after the ONT is swapped resulting in numerous visits from open reach pointing their fingers at EE and EE pointing their fingers at openreach.

my issues is not the WiFi speed to the devices but the actual speed before any splitting to devices happens

You really need your own router for 1.6Gb speeds. The EE router was not really designed for a single connection of 1.6Gb, probably designed for sharing out in the house, as apposed to a single user at max speed

As Jim has said best test it early in the morning or very late at night when there is less congestion

Personally I never get less than 1650Mb and on a good day 1800Mb

Also use this a speed tester

https://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest

Hi @DaveI-88

I am just following up this afternoon to double check how things went with the engineer that visited you recently. I want to make sure you're happy that your broadband service is now performing well.

I have also messaged you privately if you could get back to me when you have a moment that would be great 🙂

Thanks,

Robbie

Well the engineer came, found no problems, called back had a second router this functioned fine for three days again before the speeds it was reporting was 83mbps from the ONT. had another open reach engineer who again tested and had two green lights and full speed to the ONT, the third router was then delivered which functioned fine for two weeks and now I’m back to 83mbps
