Wrong/Outdated Information Regarding Broadband at Property

Hi. I recently bought a property and it appears EE’s broadband checker is showing wrong information on the speeds available to it. It says the Max. Speeds are 150mbs, when I know it to be 900mbs. When checking Openreach and BT, it will say the Max. Speeds are 900mbs, so I don’t understand why there is a discrepancy here. Since EE’s broadband is powered by BT this seems to me even more bizarre. As I’m already on a 900mbs contract I do need to know how to proceed as I don’t want to incur an early termination fee.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

@nomad1996 you don't say which checkers you have tried.

Openreach's tends to give a what might be available, EE's include mobile as well as home broadband speeds.

To get a definitive result, enter your details in the BTW DSL Checker - ideally a phone number, if you can't find that use the address checker. Post the results hiding personal info if you are not sure.

Hi Mustrum

The BTW DSL Checker you mentioned stipulates that its FTTP with a maximum of 350mbs. This is what Openreach and BT (and others) said was available on their websites before mid-August.

In mid-August however, not only was it Openreach and BT that changed their systems to say the Max. Speeds is 900mbs, but Zen, Sky, Vodafone et al. It’s only when I check EE’s broadband checker that it says it’s 150mbs. This tells me that EE’s database is outdated, and needs to be updated.

Does it say that it is "WBC FTTP" or "FTTP on Demand"? It sounds that it is "FTTP on Demand" which is an older fibre line for businesses and can cost £1000's if not £10,000s to install.

It says WBC FTTP. I don’t know what that actually means though.

WBC FTTP (Fibre To The Premises) is what EE & most other ISPs call Full Fibre. You should be able to get it from EE.

@nomad1996 One of the notes states that "ONT exists with active service." so the property already has WBC FTTP installed, But I don't know why the speed is given as up to 330Mb which is the max speed for FTTP on demand. Could you please check some of your neighbours addresses and see what their speeds are? Can you also confirm that the ONT is installed?

@Storm500 : The OP says that he is already on a 900 Meg connection but doesn't say with which ISP. If it is a BT-based ISP it must be FTTP. In which case the BTw Availability Checker must be out-of-date.

@XRaySpeX I read his post as buying a property, but as you say he's bought a property and has 900Mb where the chart says 300Mb max.

@nomad1996 Please confirm that you have 900Mb at the property? Please carry on with the check to see what your neighbours have it could be an error on your record. Could you also check that your address that that you use matches the Royal Mail database https://www.royalmail.com/find-a-postcode

That’s what mine said before BT/EE full fibre was available. Once full fibre was ready, it changed to this…

Once this was displayed and only then, could I order full fibre.

Not sure if this helps, but it’s what I’ve experienced.

Yes, the lady I bought it from has confirmed that she was using 900mbs when she left. She was with BT.
Interestingly, while all of my postcode has supposedly only 150mbs, the postcode directly next to mine has 900mbs available with EE. Would it be best to contact EE Broadband and explain the situation? Isn’t EE Broadband powered by BT Broadband? I would’ve thought that if its available with BT its available with EE.

Not quite. Both BT & EE as well as others use the OR infrastructure. All of their availabilities should be shown by that BTw Availability Checker.

So if BT and EE are using the same infrastructure then why am I getting two different results? It doesn’t make any sense. There has been a mixup somewhere.

That is the mystery that your OP highlighted!

The speed of 150 Meg you are getting from EE Availability is probably, but not exclusively, for a G.Fast connection, called by EE as "Fibre Max". This is a short-distance form of FTTC, not FTTP. What name did it give to the 150 Meg connection? Was it something like "Fibre Max"?

It comes up as Full Fibre 150mbs essentials. And nothing else. But the lady who occupied the house previously said she was with BT and had 900mbs installed back in August.
