Hi,

I'm at a loss and hoping someone can help as to why the Wifi speed shown on my laptop is so low compared to other devices, I'm hoping someone can help with Laptop settings etc.

Long story short I had SKY Fibre 500+ for last 2 years, connection was fine on all devices accept my Desktop PC and partners Laptop, I bought a Gigabyte Aero 16 laptop recently but still had same issue over Wifi. Mobile would show 300-500mbps, PS5 would show 300-500mbps but laptops and PC would show 10 - 40mbps.

I've just changed Fibre provider to EE as I thought SKY were the issue, but now having 700+ fibre installed, I still have same issue on laptops, even standing right next to the router.

So new Laptop, new router, new provider = 10 - 40mbps

Could this be a settings issue?

Thanks,

Gavin Gronkowski

Hi @gavgronk

It depends on the modem installed in your laptop but it is clear this is the issue if all other devices are showing better speeds. (Settings -network and internet)

Turn off power management on your laptop modem (adapter property settings)

Check what IEEE band your laptop modem is using (normally this is auto) change it it ax if that available on your router (WiFi 6) this is done under WiFi settings

Make sure your driver's are up-to-date.

It all depends on what WiFi adapter the lappy has.

Run the command ipconfig /all from a command line. On the entry "Wireless LAN adapter WiFi:" what Description does it say, e.g. "Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165"?

OK, that WiFi adapter should be well fast enough. It's WiFi-6E.

Weird thing is it shows a much higher speed on WI-FI status than a speedcheck website like below, although downloads are really slow so I'm guessing the speeds are low.

What is the most accurate way of checking speed ?
