Additionally, where exactly are the USB options on the router? beyond the ability to change its name and function (which do not even save after being saved)

By that I mean the ability to set the usb as a storage device, to view its prospective dns, or to access the nas software which should be present on this router..

2tb SSD usb flash storage successfully mounted and 'connected' to router, exFAT formatted.

SMB1 active, drive and contents not visible on network.

No specific sharing options available on router home screen, not many options at all tbh.

Mapping network location/drive fails, however even attempting to access \\192.168.1.254\ fails as 'device refuses to accept the connection' (tried \usb0\ and \usb1\ also)

What have I missed?

This is far from a solution, the compatible file system for external storage devices is FAT32 (which is now nearly 29 years old), anything newer (exFAT, NTFS) aren't supported. Which is pathetic - CORRECTION, NTFS is supported, exFAT is not, apologies.

Having to scrap this idea now of usb external storage and research/invest in a NAS server that'll use the ethernet port on the router.

You should be able to access it as \\192.168.1.254\{VolumeLabel of USB Drive} .

The router's USB supports only NTFS, FAT16 or FAT32 formatted drives. Dunno about exFAT.
