VOIP keeping my landline number.

Landline number will disappear soon.

Will EE be offering VOIP for their customer's existing landline numbers?

I have seen the BT YouTube video for setting up a WiFi VOIP phone, it didn't show how the landline number is associated, it concentrated on setting up Alexa instead. Please help and advise.

Also with these linux handsets will we also be able to connect to WhatsApp & FB Messenger?

@JohnP56 EE don’t offer VOIP and I doubt they ever will.

Using a Linux device with apps will be down to the developers of those apps that has nothing to do with EE.

EE will eventually take over all BT Consumer custs as their main BB + home phone provider. As such they are sure to provide Digital Voice (DV), BT's take on VoIP.

To add to the above, landline numbers are not disappearing, it is the old analogue way of delivering phone calls that is going. In many cases you will simply use your old phone but plugged into the back of your router, other solutions will no doubt follow.

Thank you for your reply.

Talking to a friend who works for the EE consortium, she comes from German T-Systems part, she was saying that the consortium might eventually own BT.

I'm interesting is the Digital Voice and if it will work with my EE smarthub and how the service would be presented to the smarthub.

As the IT volunteer with a charity I wiil have roll this out on our phone systems.

My EE smarthub doesn't have the phone socket so I would need a either an ATA or to use it via WiFi.

Actually, you don’t have to use BT or EE’s VoIP service, you can use any VoIP provider of your choice.

You can port your existing landline number to Vonage for example, Vonage is a VoIP provider and you can use it on any broadband connection anywhere in the world.

You can port any telephone to anywhere you like as long as it’s physically possible.

@Nicholas_Ros - the problem with porting a number from a fixed landline that has a broadband service running over it, is that it's likely to cease both the fixed line service and the broadband.

That is not an issue as i have already moved from landline broadband to EE mobile broadband. What i want to do now is move my landline number to voip to avoid paying exorbitant monthly rental fees.

I have not cancelled EE mobile broadband and do not intend to. All i am trying to do is reduce the monthly rental on my landline which is rarely used. Switching to voip seems to be the answer but EE do not seem to be in a position to help.

@weimarana : I'm talking about EE Home BB, not mobile BB. If you have a landline you must have EE Home BB.

You posted earlier that you had already moved FROM it. So I dunno where you are.

@weimarana there is not much for EE to do if you want to move your landline number to a VOIP provider.

As already pointed out by doing so it will cease your EE landline and broadband, 14 days cancelation would apply, as would early termination fees if your contract has not ended.

EE do not provide a VOIP service, so you will just need to use one you prefer.

Ao what is it that you are looking for EE to help with?

I definitely have EE mobile broadband, getting download speeds of 25 to 35 Mb/sec.
Previously i got 1 to 2 Mb/sec from Plusnet BB via the landline. I just want a means of keeping my landLine phone number without paying the exorbitant line rental. The copper landline will be discontinued in the next few years anyway.

Porting your landline number to a VoIP provider is a gaining provider led process i.e. you engage the VoIP supplier and they co-ordinate things from their side.

Who are you paying the 'exhorbitant line rental' to currently? If it's EE, then the only thing you need to establish is what happens when you're landline service is cancelled (which will likely happen as part of the outbound number porting process) i.e. you need to make sure that you won't be charged any early exit fees and that there won't be any knock on impact on your mobile Broadband service.

FYI, the majority of VoIP providers will probably apply a one-off charge for the number porting. Recurring charges beyond that point depend on the provider.

Well, if you no longer want fixed BB, it's simple for you. Just port your landline no. to a VoIP provider. That will auto cancel your PN BB, subject to any early termination fees if you are still within contract term.
