The DSL checker you can indeed get FTTP, a 1 stage instal and your line is fed via overhead. Are you the only one fed by the line? Often the will remove the current copper line, and even use it to pull the fibre from the pole.

Health and Safety rules are quite strict, so if the line anchor point is quite high, they need to have their ladder bolted to the house before doing anything, or get a cherry picker involved.

It would be worth you having a look before they do come to look where a practical place to site the ONT, and the route the fibre will be routed. Tea and Choccy biscuits can help, but they will be looking to make the job as easy as they can for them.

Weds this week Openreach are due to install G.Fast here. They gave us a time slot 1:00-3:00pm. My problem here is that my wife will be workng online until 1:25pm and it is critical that the internet is not disconnected before that. So, is the 2 hour time period (1 -3 pm) a window for when they might turn up? Or, is it a full 2 hour install process?

If OR arrive at say 1:15pm how likely is it that the engineer can delay actually disconnecting our current FTTC service until 1:25pm? If anyone knows the BT procedure for G.Fast installs, perhaps they could let me know how it might pan out on the day.

Well, OR arrived at 1.25pm pretty good timing after all. He fitted 5C/G.Fast socket and disappeared, in the rain, to the cabinet (200m around the corner).

I used the EE router and it synched ok after he'd returned (30mins later), at around 103Mbps - the engineer said it was 110 at the cabinet. He said it will not be settled to full speed until day 10. I was promised by EE around 150. The slightly disappointing aspect is the upload speed is only 8mbps at the moment. It was 18 on VDSL. I hope this will improve significantly, but I wasn't expecting such a slow speed to start with.

Download speeds are around 75-90. Does anyone know if it will mess up the 'settling in' phase if I swap back to my own router/modem? (TP-link AX72 + Vigor 166)

Thanks for your interest, I'll update when something changes/improves.

As for settling in period, that was the story for ADSL, but should be only a day or two for VDSL/G Fast.

Providing your modem syncs up OK and you get the PPOE set on your router, without too many drops you should be OK. However frequent drops or failed attempts may slow your speeds.

Have you used the BTW DSL checker to show the speeds you should expect? https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL

Your phone number will give the most accurate results, otherwise try the address check.

It's been a week since OR installed G.Fast here. Initially the sync rate was 103Mbps download/8Mbps upload - the engineer said it would pickup over the next ten days. It has not improved, in fact it has gone down to 90. It seems to vary between 85-95 with SNR of 4 - 2db respectively. The upload speed has stayed between 7-8 Mbps.

This is not inspiring confidence as it has been 7 days now. Admittedly I swapped from the EE hub to my own setup after a couple of hours. I am using the Draytek Vigor 166 modem and a TP-Link AX72 router which automatically detected the modem connection as PPPOE.

I ran a check on btwholesale's broadband checker - which showed a G.Fast capability of 164 down and 22 up ('clean'). The 'impacted' rates shown were basically what I am seeing at the moment, namely 80/ 6.4 and that's the 'low' estimates according to the bt checker. The bt speed test gave me a download profile of 93Mbps and an upload profile of 30Mbps, so something is askew somewhere.

Any suggestions gratefully accepted. Will my connection suddenly jump to full speed on day 10? Or should I look for local conditions that could affect my sync rates?

Thanks for all the help offered so far.

Welcome to EE's Home Broadband Forum.

If you would like help with your BB speed or connection issues, please would you carry out the following steps for starters, which will enable us to diagnose the problem and advise you further. Do not restart your router to do these tests:

1. Post your full router stats:

For a BrightBox: login and go to Advanced Settings > System > DSL Status. Also post 'System Uptime' from top of System Log page.

For a SmartHub: login and go to Advanced Settings > Technical Log > Information. Obscure your names & any numbers in the BB Username & also the SSIDs.

For other routers: login to it according to the label on it as the admin user & navigate looking for its router/connection statistics.

Full router stats are key to any speed & connection issues.

2. Try a wired speedtest, using an Ethernet cable supplied with the router, here http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html . Click on the "Results Page" button at the bottom of the graph you first see and then copy to here just the "Link to this result:" link that you see below the next main graph.

3. What does BT Wholesale Broadband Availability Checker estimate for your phone number? Post just the whole table and the line above it, blanking out your phone number. If it doesn't recognise your phone number or you don't have one, use the Address Checker, not the Postcode Checker.

That means they might look different to what you've seen before.
We estimate you can get download speeds of between 73.0 Mb/s and 145.6 Mb/s, and upload speeds of between 5.8 Mb/s and 20.2 Mb/s.
Your Minimum Guaranteed Download Speed will be 65.80 Mb/s."

I assumed the low speeds was just to cover themselves - I didn't really expect it to be slower than the 80/20 fibre service we just upgraded from.

Well, you're within EE's estimates altho' with no Bridge Tap I would think you would be within the Clean range. However EE seem not to take notice of Clean vs. Impacted & just estimate for a straddle.

There's no 10-day settling down period. It's a myth.

Hi,

I recently posted regarding a new G.Fast installation on November 23rd. The OR engineer told us to wait 10 days and the speed will pick up. It was sync-ing at 110Mbps at the cabinet at the time. Ten days came and went and the speed only went down - getting around 85Mbps upload and only 9Mbps upload.

A different OR engineer came out on 13 December and did a great job of isolating the fault but said BT would not repair it. The fault is a 106m underground cable installed in the 1970s. So we are stuck with half a service now - until FTTP is available.

My burning question is: why does the upload speed have to be so slow when the line is capable of more? I would happily give up 5-10 Mbps of download speed in order to get our uploads up to 15-20Mbps. The noise margin for downloads varies between 5-7db, but the upload figure is consistently 3.2db. The upload speed must be set low artificially, surely?.

I have requested that EE change the upload speed ( but so far they have not done anything with that.

@stevedr EE have no ability to set your sync speeds, that is down to the condition of the line and your modem connection to the equipment in the cabinet. G Fast tries to push the limits of technology, and you will only get the max speeds with a good line. You may actualy be better off going back to VDL - what were your sync speeds when you had that?

Well, the G.Fast did not work for us, because of the ancient lead covered cable under the ground. But the good news is that BT just activated the FTTP service so that's getting installed next week.

I'm pretty sure the 500/100 service will sort our upload speed issues. Thanks to all for your suggestions and general helpfulness. 🙂
