Hi,

So I have just given Virgin notice on all of my services after 4 years, as they couldn't meet my price expectations.

I have EE mobiles and so the discount and extra data available on EE are tempting.

I've seen on here that you can use your own router, so that is one of my main questions answered, but if anyone can help with the rest I would appreciate it:

1) I run some servers from home, including home assistant and a full stack mail server (not port 25, I forward through a relay service). Are all ports open on the EE network like they are on Virgin? If not, is anything blocked at all?

2) Do EE provide the ability to have a static IP? If not, does anyone know how often it changes?

3) Has anyone had Openreach do an install upstairs in their property? Did it go well?

4) With Virgin, the speed is constant no matter what time of day I try it. Does the same hold true for EE Full Fibre?

Thanks in advance for your help 🙂

David

EE block no ports.

EE don't provide static public IPs but their dynamic IPs are fairly sticky.

It has been known.

Speed should be constant throughout the day.

@daveuns you must be one of the licky few if you have access to VM and Openreach full fibre. I assume you have checked your address on the BTW DSL checker https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL

As with any ISP constant speeds through out the day depend on how many others are trying to do the same thing as you at the same time as you are - so much will depend on others on your network, and others connected locally trying to use the same services as you. But BTW tend to be better than VM at sorting congestion issues in my experience.

I am one of the lucky ones, and I think that City Fibre are on their way too. But, with a 5.5km phone line we have had our fair share of struggles in the past, even FTTC could only provide us with 24/10!

My EE VDSL fttc IP hasn't changed since late May, no idea how long it might stay like that though as to solve lack of static IP I have a Draytek modem router which offers a free DNS service that I use to access my home network when away.

That's good to know. I use my Ubiquiti Edgerouter lite to update dnsomatic, then use that to update cloudflare. Doesn't really require me to think about it, but it would just be easier with a static IP. It's not something I'd rather pay another 16 quid a month for though (another ISP that can do it is charging £59 a month).
