Hello,

My elderly Mum currently has

A landline & ADSL broadband provided by Plusnet

and

A telecare alarm provided by the local council. This is NOT connected to the landline or the ADSL Broadband. It links somehow via the mobile phone system.

Plusnet wanted to transfer my Mum to EE and use FTTP technology. I’m happy about this; I understand we want to get rid of copper etc.

EE now say they can’t transfer to FTTP because she has a telecare alarm, even though the telecare alarm is independent.

EE states that I have to use BT as my ISP and land landline. I have no objections apart from BT apart from charges are £15 PCM more than EE and the broadband speed will be only 25mbs (FTTP).

Is this really the case?

Do I have to use BT, because of a telecare alarm that has nothing to do with it ?

Any advice?

Thank you in advance.

It looks like BT want to put her on FTTP but only with like-for like speeds to her existing ADSL.

Does the Telecare Alarm work correctly when the SIM is removed? It could be the SIM & mobile network connection is only there as fallback in case the call over BB/DV fails or v.v. There are phone handsets with SIMs for the vulnerable that are designed to do that.

I have had them for years now, always using the SIM card, but were updated to move with the times.

It's a minefield now and OR are dealing with it, so outright ask EE why not and get the answer from them.

90year old neighbour is currently going through it all and OR/BT are the ones dealing with it, FTTP priority area now and problem is the location and doing the work as Vulnerable person is now very much downstairs only, new phone the FW500 has arrived, pendant all sorted out by her daughter just got to get over the OR/BT FF Full Fibre connection now, not a great mobile area signal may be a partial stumbling block also.

The Telecare alarm has its own SIM card buried under a cover.

The telecare alarm works independently of the EE/Openreach system. If you disconnect everything from the primary socket, where the landline and modem are connected, the Telecare alarm still works.

I can't see why EE are objecting to the Telecare alarm. Which is why I originally posted.
