Hi

I've just had my 1.6Gbps full fibre installed yesterday and without my VPN switched on I'm receiving the full 1.6 down and 115 up. However when connecting my Surfshark or Mullvad VPN using Wireguard protocal the speed drops to around 500Mbps. I've tried deleting all my VPN connection on my Unifi router and recreating my key pairs etc as well I setting up different VPN servers but the speed is always the same. I've also tried setting up OpenVPN, both TCP and UDP and these are even worse with speeds around 200Mpbs.

So my question is do EE perform some sort of throttling on VPN connections and is there a way around it? If not then I'll need to cancel my contract as I'm still in my cooling off period and wondered if anyone has recomendations on whose services works best with VPN conntions?

Thanks

Hi

I have tried numerous VPN servers, I've also been troubleshooting with the VPN providers all afternoon and they can't find a reason for the slowness.

I never had this kind of slowness with Airband full fibre, just the usual expected 10-15% slow down. not the 60% plus I'm seeing here. So wondering if anyone else has this issue, or if not which VPN provider are you using?

Thanks

I'm not expecting 1.6Gb over a VPN, but I do expect it to be more than 500Mps, usual overhead on Wireguard VPN connections is around 10-15%. I'm just wondering if EE throttle connections when the detect a VPN or wether its something else and I need to look for another VPN.

What does it show when you have it connected up to the ONT? All the Lan/Wan interfaces on that unit are 2.5Gb/s speed rated so you can connect it up and see?

When you were on the Airband FF900 package what speed were getting vpn wise, OR Policing parameter you are well over at the 500mb/s so do not think that would be an issue at all.

Whereas my Ubiquiti router doesn't state its max VPN speeds, but I'm starting to think it's probably around 500-600Mbps. Just waiting for Ubiquiti support to get back to me about it.

The wan interface on it is 10/2.5/1Gb/s but would expect it to sync at 2.5Gb/s on your new ONT from OR.

Was why i asked you to do the packet loss test, will hammer the upload connection real rapid and see if there is delay's etc.

Cloudflare is below if you prefer, that will give you up/down to inspect. All testing with Ethernet if possible wireless is just to iffy at present....

https://speed.cloudflare.com/
