Copper wires still going strong.....

So, forced to move from plusnet to ee cos still wanted to keep landline.

New huge router all up and running yesterday and all works ok.

Had to change cos, words to the effect of:-

"Oh, we need to change everything cos the old copper wires are old tech and no good for today".

But.....

Before:- landline plugged into phone socket and made phone call thru copper wires installed in 1958 when house was built and working perfectly.

Now:- phone plugged into new ee router and make phone calls as voip, thru / along copper wire.....?!

What was all that about then ?

Why change from copper, unless, and fair enuf if so, u need a big upgrade on download speeds ?

I had 35meg with plusnet, and now New huge router from ee, doubled to 70 odd.

35meg did everything. All devices, streaming 2 tvs etc etc.

@WishboneAsh69 It's all about the PSTN switch off on the 31st Jan 2027, copper is still a medium for the delivery and PN made the decision NOT to support a landline, so if you did not move you would have had a phone on a Temp supply an NO Broadband as that would have been cut off.

You may still have the FF Full Fibre option if it does still happen to be coming down the pipeline in the Future if OR Openreach are going to cover your area. If not copper it will be until or if they do.

If your getting the 70odds as you say, at least your line was capable off doing so and clamped by PN on a 40/10 split, now your on the EE 80/20 split, size off the EE Hub has Nothing at all to do with speeds, if you don't like the new hub go get a BT Smarthub2 version 2nd hand one, it will work, and looks like your old PN version with a working DV connection on it.

Unfortunately copper broadband is being done away with in this part of
Edinburgh and we have no option but to go full fibre.

Interesting....

So, they are saying you will not be able to / can't connect to the copper wires then ?

Is that what you mean by done away with ?

So you are being forced to go FF ?

Does that mean increased costs for you, e.g. installation, more per month etc ?

@WishboneAsh69 , the cost of installation is done by Open Reach at no cost to you, and depending what speed you want and how much you are paying now, it could be cheaper, as that is what happened to me.

Had 32 Mb and now have 74 Mb, means I am saving £9 per month, you just have to take a look at the pricing. Obviously, if you want an even faster speed , then it could cost more, and with an EE router, if you want your landline, you can plug it into the router. I personally have my own router, so much easier to set up, as I do not need EE TV, so save money as well, in the long run.
