EE launched the 1.6 service in June 2023 - EE SETS NEW STANDARD FOR HOME BROADBAND WITH SUPERCHARGED 1.6 GBPS FULL FIBRE, A NEW SUITE OF IN-HOME HARDWARE - FEATURING MOBILE BACK-UP, AND NEXT-GEN WIFI CONTROLS

Is the only way of upgrading still to close my existing account and open up a new one?
My contract expires 29 Aug.

I think there's a 2 week 'takeover' notification period, so should I (or my wife) create a new account 2 weeks before 29 Aug, signing up for 1.6, and this will automatically terminate my existing contract? Would any charges (if contract period ended) likely apply? Such as for notice period?

Or should I do this via customer services?

If my understanding is correct, and this still isn't an easy upgrade, I'm quite surprised.. It's been THREE YEARS. I understand the backend is different, but that should be hidden from the customer experience....

@planetf1b The 1.6Gb/s was all integrated into the one system few months ago now, were all the user accounts stopped working for a week or so, it should in theory be a straight forward upgrade so once your upgrade window opens up you should be able to do straight from the package you have, will also require the ONT swap out to the 2.5Gb/s Ethernet Interface unless yours is already there with one backend has all been integrated EE wise now, TV and Digital Voice all working as well. If you do have to close / open you will no doubt see in your upgrade period. Good luck with it all.

Good to hear there's been progress, though for me - as an existing customer in the renew invite period, no sign of 1.6 (there is as a new customer, it is seemingly deployed here) Guess it's a call or just do a takeover on new account when contract is ended.

I'm still unsure about timings of the latter -- if a line takeover is 2 weeks notice, is that sufficient? (assuming that ends outside minimum period)
