Hello all,

We originally had the Ubiquiti UDM and the UAP-AC-Pro, but we are upgrading our EE FTTP to 1.6gb (and also future proofing)

I’ve also noticed the person who installed our cables to the loft used CAT5, and the cable running from the ONT into the UDM was CAT5e, there was also a CAT cable in loft. So a bit of mumble jumble of cables which we will have our engineer sort when we book him, and ensure every cable is changed to CAT6

So our upgraded set now consists of:
1 x UDR7 (2.5gb ports) which sits in our living room
1 x U7-Pro which is on the ceiling top of stairs below loft (1st Floor)
1 x POE Powered in loft: cable from UDR7 runs out side from living room up into the loft and into the POE, then it’s powers the AP Disc.

As mentioned in another thread we’ve had issues prev with the WiFi outside to power the Ring Floodlight camera, although it now works better between 5-6mbps connection

As we’re booking an engineer in to swap over the cables, we may as well have an External Antenna for the rear wall fitted, and a switch in the loft which will power the U7-Pro and Antenna combined.

My question would be if anyone has any experience with this equipment; which suitable home Antenna should I purchase and which switch (which really only needs 2 POE) outputs so nothing nigh spec / high cost is required for just home usage.

I thought about the below, but maybe the antenna is overkill, or if anyone has any other suggestions would be fantastic

Picture again needs to be cleared for viewing. Ubiquiti also do switches at 2.5Gb/s and are reasonably priced, so why not just stick with them on that!

Yes it’s definitely CAT5 in the loft but I’ll check again when I get home and reply back.

The switch I was looking at was the below Flex Mini 2.5gb ports, would that do in the loft?

https://uk.store.ui.com/uk/en/products/usw-flex-2-5g-5

But will also need a recommendation on Antenna to use

After some more checks of the cables in the loft, I can confirm the black cables from the living room up (from UDR7) into the loft, and which feeds the POE Injector and 4th bedroom is CAT6 (phew)

Although for some reason he used CAT5 cable from the splitter module (which was left open and doesn;t look good) to the Injector which is rather odd. Why would you cut the cable, then splice it into a splitter module then connect an RJ45 plug from that into the Injector? Would you rather not just connect an RJ45 plug onto the end of the CAT6 cable...

Pictures are not all cleared yet, couple with the cables are for cat 5/6...

Your 2.5Gb/s connection would be better on the cat 6 but as you explained that is all good with your cable runs. Switch looks fine, take it you are going to power it up over the POE RJ45 connection at the 2.5Gb/s input last on the right!

Why would the engineer who fitted the CAT6 cables, splice into the module and have it left open?

Would it not have been best practise to place an RJ45 connector and crimp it onto the end of the CAT6 black cable, then plug it directly into the Injector? I’m trying to find a suitable reason why he wouldn’t…

Knowing that the cables are all CAT6 and we won’t require an Engineer t upgrade, I’m thinking I could do the Antenna / Switch install myself, I just need confirmation on the below would be best to purchase?

In the loft: Ubiquiti ‘Flex 2.5g POE’ switch, which has POE outputs

External Wall back door: Ubiquiti ‘U7-Outdoor’ Antenna Wifi7

As an Engineer myself i can see why he did it!

Does not say that the switch has POE outputs, certainly can be powered POE so that you do need to check.

Outdoor unit looks smart, then again all the Ubiquiti does. You should be good to go on the New ONT and the 1.6Gb/s speed package with all that you have, FF500 and poor Asus 4 node mesh with Powerline were needed awkward spot's for me, internal speed is all i care about the Internet just does not handle HS all the time so covered what was needed so the Good lady / Daughter don't fight over the bandwidth when needed, bliss since FF installed coming up for it's 2nd birthday shortly.
